I do not believe that America is Rome.

What I believe is that rhetorics of power & oppression are inherently similar over all time and space. Trump is not Caligula or Caesar, but what we can say is: we must recognize the ways that law, invective & brute force are being used to protect autocracy.

sort of underlining how dysfunctional and unfocused the administration is, the president tweets out a deadly serious allegation of sedition and calls for hanging sitting senators and the DOJ’s official course of action is to do nothing, no one’s in charge
“Oh damn, the president ordered the murder of his political opponents” is super bad and to a large extent so is “nobody under him lifted one single finger toward that goal” because who is exercising the power of the presidency at that point?

One thing both of Villeneuve's Dune movies /and/ the Dune: Prophecy series get consistently wrong is that the Voice is /so much/ more than simply a Voice of Command.

Considering how so very much /subtlety/ is one of the Bene Gesserit strong points, it seems a strange thing to purposely gloss over.

imagine any other US president in american history calling the american people a bunch of unemployed, uneducated, ignorant boobs who don't even know what a computer chip is, and insisting that they'll need to be educated by the taiwanese to work in US-based, taiwanese-owned factories
Trump: "You can't come in, open up a massive computer chip factory…and think you're going to hire people off an unemployment line to run it. They're going to have to bring thousands of people with them, and I'm going to welcome those people."

one thing i think is true is that republicans assumed that democrats would not respond in kind and that the forceful pushback spooked them (a lesson to learn here, perhaps)
Trump's corrupt scheme to rig 2026 is suddenly falling apart:

*Court strikes down Texas GOP gerrymander
*Indiana GOP lacks votes to redraw map
*Big Dem win in Virginia could give Ds more seats

On the pod, DLCC head Heather Williams is informative on what's next:

Trump’s Plot to Rig 2026 Is Falling Apart, and Boy Is He Mad About It
As the Trump-GOP scheme to gerrymander the midterms suddenly faces big new setbacks, a Democratic operative who’s leading in these fights explains why the battle isn’t over—and what must happen now.

As a kid and teenager—and sometimes an adult—I was always surprised that people who told me, "You will do X, end of discussion," actually thought I'd interpret it as, "You have to obey me because discussion is over," and not as "Disobey me all you want, but you know where I stand."

Until my editors at Harper Collins completely disappeared and stopped work on my manuscript, forcing me to pull it.

Creäted a very comfy reading perch on the sofa.

Promptly napped. Very little reading done.

I blame the plush pillows and fluffy blanket.

Let's try again. More reading. Less napping.

The second paragraph of every article about Trump freeing House Republicans to vote to release the Epstein files should make it clear that he could order them released himself and chooses not to.

This really needs to be stressed, as it seems obvious Trump is going to let them vote to release it and then pretend his hands are tied.

He’s had the power to release them all along, and still does. It’s just his excuses that are changing.

Don’t waste your time fact-checking these numbers, don’t engage Vance's vile propaganda as if he was advancing an argument in good faith.

Call out the underlying political project: A violent, authoritarian blood-and-soil nationalism that defines “America” as a white Christian homeland.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

They're running from it now. But the fact that Senate Republicans tried to give 10 of their colleagues at least $1 million each for nothing but a bogus press op captures the corruption of Trump II. In no other environment wld this even occur to the most corrupt politicians.

you could fact check this — there aren’t 30 million illegal immigrants and there is no evidence that the presence of an immigrant in say houston has any impact on housing in madison, wisconsin — or you could note straightforwardly that this is just nazi rhetoric
