Recommended.

It's not just a history of the empire of the United States, but a history of how (mostly white) people from the United States have thought about our empire and how we've been taught to process its existence—and as the title implies, how we've been taught to /not/ process its existence.

There be twenty chosen prophets,
The wisest of the land,
Who always by river posts
Both morn and evening stand:
Evening and morn the Twenty
Have turned prophecies o'er,
Traced from the right bank to the left
By mighty birds of yore.

My humble apologies to Macaulay.

Make of this what you will. If there is something hobbity about me aside from being cheerful and short, it's that fame, prestige, and clout can miss me. As much as I love reading history, I don't want to be a subject of it.

The volume on the TV is a prime number.

To the tenth of a pound this morning, I am exactly the weight on my driver's license.

The Heavens align.

O Gods of Comforting Routines and Fastidy, please accept this Venn Metadiagram and release the Dopamine.

This is a real photo. Taken by me personally. I vouch that this bottle exists in real life. The marketing strategy that produced it may have been an AI hallucination, but unfortunately this is not.

"Oh, no, we just got that for the frame. We weren't goïng to keep the art."

First that Montaigne/Salvador Dali book, now this. I may be unemployed, but I'm being /showered/ with treasures. 😍

It happens so often in books that I came up with a word for it, polissing. Polissing is when a writer mentions something adjacent to Greek political theory, tripping the mandatory 5-15 page essay about what Plato and Aristotle thought about the Polis. Then the writer gets on with their point.

I would very much hope that people would know that sitting down in a situation where a stampede is likely—i.e., when "violence breaks out at a protest"—is almost certain to get you killed. Has everyone around you been /trained/ to do this or are you betting your life on the Power of Friendship?

Do they though? Do the fools know it? I'm not sure they do. You damn well know which fools I'm talking about.

I love that administrative gobbledygook was an established dialect even in some of the oldest administrative texts we have.

The inscription mentioned is from ca. 2900 BCE.

"There I was, the center, in a way, of nine hundred thousand books in various languages, but I found I could barely make out the title pages and the spines."

This is like that moment in a movie when they say the title.

from Daniel Immerwahr's "How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States," pg. 340.

Quip aside, this book is not lighthearted.

Ahh, that alternate dimension where Taco Bell had chicken nuggets on its menu. Hiw did I end up here?

I'm just always agog when politically-active Protestants make it clear they think Catholicism is a joke and Catholics aren't real Christians. The only way one would make such a ridiculous statement about Papal succession is if one thinks Catholicism itself is ridiculous.
