I did my PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, which has more Chinese students than any other US university. I had the privilege of teaching and collaborating with Chinese students there.

This makes me indescribably angry for them and for all of us who benefit from our work together
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

Withholding food from children, elderly, and disabled citizens as leverage to cut healthcare is some pretty diabolical shit. #SNAP needs to be fully restored.

Wow, it’s almost like—ok hear me out—it’s almost like authoritarian regimes are actively hostile to science….and like…the U.S. is viewed as a bastion of intellectual freedom, where science itself is held as a pillar of democracy.

Crazy!

IT'S HAPPENING: House Democrats are introducing articles of impeachment against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr for slashing research funding and spreading medical misinformation.
🚨BREAKING NEWS: Congresswoman files articles of impeachment against RFK Jr. We've been sounding the alarm for months, sending 3k+ quack-o-grams, and collecting 25k petition signatures calling on our reps to impeach & remove RFK Jr.

We’re closing in on him. Help us WIN the fight. 🦆 zurl.co/vkZQV

If you're asking an AI bot for answers, you're looking for a well-written Wikipedia page, not a dissertation or an expert working group.

But the cool thing is that already exists, it's called a Wikipedia page, it's free and you can find them online.

"this product is good because it's like having a pocket full of PhDs" just suggests to me you've never actually been in a room with a bunch of experts on a topic.

You think you're going to come away with a quick, simple, easy-to-digest summary of their expertise? Think again.

If you’ve read or heard of The Salt Path, read this. If a memoir claims to be unflinchingly honest, it really should be. And if the nature of Moth’s illness is wrong, it’s very important that other sufferers realise they can’t walk their way back to health.

PSA Neck gaiters are not masks. Neck gaiters are not effective at stopping the spread of airborne viruses. Masks, especially well-fitting ones are effective at preventing infection. Conflating the two is bad because it can encourage politicians to ban masks for the general public.

Jonathan Joss (Comanche, White Mountain Apache) did not simply die from a gunshot. He was murdered in a homophobic, racist hate crime by his former neighbors. He died saving his partners life. Honor his legacy-- both queerness and Indigeneity are inextricable to why he was targeted.

3 guys, none with infectious disease or pedatric expertise, just ran roughshod over normal procedures to block COVID shots for kids, pregnant people. This is so awful & insane & we should treat it as such. Reporters, you're on notice. Both sides this at your peril & watch your credibitlity evaporate
No, @nytimes.com, an anti-vaxx grifter is no longer recommending #Covid vaccines. Many of us in the US with actual medical credentials still recommend it.

Addendum: ideally we’ll build a world where queer kids don’t have to be resilient at all. They deserve to not have to worry about decades of oppression, to draw from the decades of desperate attempts to survive.

I want all kids to be allowed to just be carefree and happy. Let’s make it happen!

It’s no wonder why the government is trying to restrict queer kids’ access to their history (with censorship, book bans, pretending queer elders are “grooming” rather than throwing marginalized kids a lifeline by accepting them and welcoming them to community). Fight it all!

Remember that the queer kids they’re targeting in the US have only ever known (relative) queer acceptance. Can you imagine how terrified they must be?

But queer history shows us tools to be resilient, we need to get these tools to scared young people! These tools can help allies too:

I did find out faculty feedback is okay and have an office hours meeting w/ a prof on Monday. I just want to get the revised draft sorted more/hashed out more before sending it… but I know I need it send it soon so there’s time for them to review it before we chat, if they want to.

Stressed over something that’s maybe silly but actually not? I’m trying to switch over from using Scribbr citation generator to Zotero, esp for this bigger project… but it seems like zotero has fucked up in-text citations and inserting them is more cumbersome than w/ scribbr ☹️
