This! Protecting the neutrality of the BBC is more important than ever. The wealthiest nation in the world has a news environment that doesn’t even agree on basic facts. It’s not healthy for democracy.
Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

What on Earth is this? An "in depth" BBC article about free speech in the UK that only cites examples of right-wing/ 'anti-woke' speech being suppressed. How can you mention Lucy Connolly but completely ignore Palestine Action / Just Stop Oil? Gob-smacking. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
How the simmering UK freedom of speech row reached boiling point
How did we reach a point where the UK is being compared to a 'tin pot Third World dictatorship'?

It’s almost a hundred years and we now have our very own appeaser in government. Labour will regret the soft touch. Because now, as with all bullies, if you appease them they’ll just come back for you later because they know you’re easy. Shame on Starmer.

Keir Starmer is a useless, insipid appeaser of fascism.
Left: BBC News, "President Trump threatening to sue the BBC"

Right: That time Keir Starmer said, "There's so much to celebrate in that special relationship between our two countries"

Not many people can claim to have released 30 studio albums. Paul Kelly is one. He released "Seventy" on Friday. It's a lovely thing. www.on-magazine.co.uk/arts/music/a...

You would have thought that history's lesson about appeasing the populist right would have been learned by now. Apparently not.

My one #politics post of the day.

Starmer's refusal to clear out Tory appointments to the BBC Board and other public bodies from day one was at best deeply naive.

Again we come back to the mystery of what Labour were doing pre-2024 election as it definitely wasn't preparing for power.

Should Gibb be sacked? yes, obviously. He's an abomination of basic journalistic standards. His GB News channel spreads conspiracy theory & disinformation. His Jewish Chronicle newspaper spreads invented stories. He is plainly trying to undermine the BBC so it's as bad as everything else he touches.

This as not simply populism, it's an extreme assault on public institutions and structures. The last week has been about the BBC, but comes alongside mounting attacks on judicial independence/the European Court of Human Rights. Treating each issue in isolation will see them killed off one by one.
What you’re witnessing is a populist assault on the BBC.

This is not an institutional scandal in any meaningful sense of the word. It is an attack on public service broadcasting.

This is a superb piece by @iandunt.bsky.social on the crisis at the BBC. What we need is a culture secretary on top of her brief to step up & defend the independence of the BBC. Nandy's recent handling of the the Maccabi Tel Aviv affair gives me no confidence. iandunt.substack.com/p/extra-edit...

The MSM media's fixation on prisoner releases could do considerably better on the context that the current prisons minister is working.
Another very pertinent fact that I have not seen mentioned ANYWHERE: In 14 years of Tory rule we had 14 Prisons Ministers - six in a single year, at one point - and a total of 11 Justice Secretaries, including Grayling, Raab, and Truss. In 13 years of Labour it was three: Irvine, Falconer, Straw. 🤔
