Reasons to Teach High School English when the World is on Fire

Black girls in advanced academics who write literary analyses about “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” Queer kids who call the English Department The Fruit Factory. Allowables and Legacies by Nikki Giovanni.
I’m starting to believe if you’re an educator and you voted for this administration, it’s time to see your way out of the classroom.

Let. Them. Fail.

If students can’t do the bare minimum, they cannot pass the class.

I’ve struggled with this my entire career. I teach collegiate and advanced courses; I know it’s my job to make them do hard things. If they pass my class and can’t do hard things, I failed.

And I don’t fail.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

I really enjoyed this movie, y’all.🥹

Grief is a weird monster and Eternity tackles this so beautifully.
Eternity - a well crafted story by Pat Cunnane and David, Freyne. It’s a funny, heartwarming, and provocative tale.

Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner knock it out of the park! Really interesting performances- the layers and challenges these roles presented.

Wanna read some of the best writing I did in my first semester of doctoral school?

It’ll surprise no one that this is my response to an article about the potential for AI use in education 😂😩

Got emotional reading a passage about a little Black girl who wants to grow up to be a Dodger just like Jackie Robinson and thinks that Harriet Tubman looks like she had a good throwing arm

I want Black kids to live in a world where those are the connections they are invited to make

“Close reading is not magic. Its power lies in argument: always vulnerable, nothing simpler and yet nothing harder. And to clarify my stakes: the way that close reading is powerful is that it lays claim to power.”

I can't speak for what was said at the protests, but seeing people react to an anodyne statement like "sacred spaces should not be used to promote activities in violation of international law" as if it were a vicious slur is clarifying.
Zohran Mamdani chastised a Manhattan synagogue that hosted an event promoting migration to Israel and settlements in occupied territories. His stance further tested his strained relationship with pro-Israel Jews in New York.

I just spent FIVE hours doing a MAJOR reorganization of my book. And I hate to inform you, but having a strong thesis *does* in fact make your entire project more organized.

Abolishing ICE is only the beginning. Have you looked at your local cops?

..

According to mappingpoliceviolence.us, police kill at least three people per day; from a meta analysis published in NYT, we now know the number could be six or even more.

Let me tell y’all about @litbark.bsky.social.

Everything I thought she was from social media? She’s that and then some. It was a blessing to be in community with her this weekend.
We are thankful for you! We thankful that you continue to pour your genius into your work… inspiring us your fellow educators and of course your students.
So grateful for this opportunity from NCTE and TCTELA 🙏🏾💛

As one of the people who could not help approaching @biblioracle.bsky.social and expressing to him how much his work has shaped my pedagogy, this reflection sums up my experience from #NCTE25.

Students and teachers crave more and AI cannot and will not be sufficient to fulfill those needs.

Yes.

No real history education + limited access to books + dependence on algorithms + the rise of AI = an easily manipulated and controlled citizenry
I feel like a lot of us were privileged to be among the last generation to be able to learn under the 60's civil rights generation. What im seeing today from this newer generation of children is a serious lack of grounding, which i think is due to them not having direct access to the type of

Brilliance + love + chaos

Thankful for this experience and for this community. These are my people.
They say, “Don’t meet your heroes,” but when these are your heroes, I 10/10 recommend it.

Thank you, #NCTE25, for this amazing experience. It was the inspirational, chaotic, course-correct (😆) that I deeply needed. 💕💕💕 @lyricalswordz.bsky.social @sheathescholar.bsky.social @heymrsbond.com

Black folk aren't as concerned about Trump the individual as white folk are. We're not.🤷🏿‍♂️

Because a lot of white folk in the US view Trump as the problem. They think he changed how white people think.

No.

Black folk know that the racism was always there. Trump just let them take the mask off.
