In these dark times, at least there is some glint in the power and hope provided by feminist art. I first “met” Marya more than a decade ago on Tumblr, & was so inspired by her. Now her project is physically present & you need to buy it &, if possible, see her speak about it/its progress. FIGHT ON.
MY BOOK IS ON SALE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was about to “bird” a link (what’s this site’s version of “tweet”?) to a non-copyrighted version of a film starring the greatest jazz songs and dance sequences of all time, then realized that’d probably still could contribute to get it taken down because of the power of platform holders. Ugh.

Oh great, and now I’ve caught the flu. At least it’s not Covid, I guess! *facepalm*

From the Reddit threads I’ve been reading, it looks like I’m fucked because interviews were not a thing when I got into my program (12 years ago, DM me if you’re thinking about Duke… I’ll give you all the tea).

Received my U Chicago application rejection while I was on the L to a seminar downtown on 18th-century literature. Gee wiz, it’d hurt if it wasn’t objectively hilarious.

Long live the New California Republic!
Must be a day ending in y. California's tired of being here again.

Basically, the country’s been taken over by a bunch of internet trolls and podcasters who thought running the government would be as easy as complaining about it.

Lol to this flashback from five years ago, and, hello properly, Bluesky (thank you for being better):

Met a random person from Côte d’Ivoire today when I went to buy groceries, and, when I said I’d studied French for 7 years, we switched to speaking in that language. Which means I’m now restarting my Duolingo lessons because, damn, I’ve forgotten so much…!

Happy Valentine’s Day to me, I guess!

Met some recent Duke undergrads at the coffee shop who’d just moved to Chicago because they saw the WXDU sticker on my laptop and asked if I was from Durham. So I gave them the lowdown on cool places in the city to watch music for free!

The few friends I have in town aren’t answering my texts, so what am I doing for NYE? I’m watching as many Coen Brothers movies as I can before they expire from @criterion streaming at midnight! Whooo!

The holidays/me gifting myself a Criterion subscription (aka playing the 24/7 in the background as I sleep and waking up to discover something brilliant at 3am I can’t pull myself away from (yesterday was THE LOVE DEVIL)), means my body’s clock is so confused now I’m making my Spam Alfredo at 5am. 🤦🏼‍♀️

“What is there to fight for? Everything! Life itself, isn't that enough? To be lived, suffered, enjoyed! What is there to fight for? Life is a beautiful, magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish.” If you’ve never seen Chaplin’s 1952 film LIMELIGHT, give yourself a gift and watch it now.

First selfie with my new baby girl was a success. I’ll believe in love at first sight forever now.

The CTA is making me late to another event even though I set out 30 minutes early because I’ve become the kind of person who HATES being late. So the troll on the Red Line who called me a “ho” almost got a lecture about the history of prostitution, but I managed to stop myself.

OH HOLY SHIT. I switched my “background sleeping show” to STAR TREK: TNG and just woke up to the argument between Data/Lor (S01E12) which is the EXACT SAME ARGUMENT we’re currently seeing about AI-involvement in writing. This episode came out 3 WEEKS AFTER I WAS BORN & is on our side.

I love when I think I’m good, then I see something I’ve never heard of on one of my SM timelines like this, that makes me know the media obsession with Austen needs to be mediated (pun intended):

God, the application process today is a misery. It’s re-entering the same information over and over in slightly different ways for no explicable reason. (Unless it’s to prove applicants aren’t bots?) And I’m going to pay $ hundreds $ for the opportunity. That money should go towards site redesigns.

Dear Application Committee,
I’m applying to your PhD program in order to be able to afford the ad-free version of streaming services so I won’t be awoken at 1am by obnoxiously loud ads for Bob’s Discount Furniture stores when I’m playing TWILIGHT ZONE in the background while sleeping.
Sincerely,
Zoë

I'm not saying you SHOULD do this -- merely that, if you do a search-and-replace on a collection of Greek mythology and accidentally turn every occurrence of "Furies" into "furries," the past gets a lot more interesting.

In the “writing sample draft” I’ve sent to people, I’d had my title as “SOMETHING KIND OF WITTY.” And I’ve just thought of the greatest quote to use… Simon to Daphne (but also me to my audience): “This may hurt a bit.”
