You want to read about how witchcraft practice aligns with cultural movements or how claims of Satanic possession align with hyper-conservative swings, read my book. It is more than just a list of witch movies. It is a cultural history: gender, politics, religion, rebellion, liberation, & industry.

Thanks Neda and @npr.org for including me in this report about Wicked and modern witchcraft.

What do actual witches think of 'Wicked'?
Mostly they're charmed. Some witches we talked to couldn't wait for the new Wicked release. But some worry that the films have helped move the secret, spiritual art of witchcraft into the mainstream.

Friends, if you haven't watched Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, I am here to nudge you to do so. This is a film that must be savored, too. It's gorgeous and haunting. And as @heathergreene01.bsky.social rec'd, bring your tissues.

This movie wrecked me! The tragedy evoked is so palpable. Although it takes place in an era long gone, the story weighs heavy in contemporary society.

@realgdt.bsky.social This is a masterpiece in cinematic storytelling.

Backlash against women in workforce? No way. NYT going retro 1987.

Next do: Are secret Satanic rituals being performed at America’s preschools? (And if so, can traditional stay at home moms save kids?)

Saying goodbye to Pauline Collins. She played one of my favorite female characters searching for joy and a purpose after kids.

Some women turn to witchcraft. Others just move to
Greece.

Safe travels Pauline. What is remembered lives.

Let me get this straight. As we head into the holiday season, the cost of our gatherings will be higher. The food will cost more. The gifts, burden with tariffs, will be higher. The cost of electricity to keep the lights on the CHRISTMAS (I said it) tree, will be highter. / 1

Day 31 of the 2025 Witch Film Festival

Wicked (2024)

Were you even surprised? The story captures the essence of witch & her plight in our society. Wicked is of our time, just as it was of its time when Maguire wrote the book. "Everyone deserves a chance to fly!"

Wicked: For Good coming soon.

The Love Witch (2015)

This indie film sneaks it's way into many a "Top 5" witch films every time I ask. If you haven't seen it, be prepared for magic, ritual, murder, and campy good fun.

Day 29 of the 2025 Witch Film Festival

The Witch (2015)

If you have not seen Robert Eggers' The Witch, stop what you are doing & watch. He weaves a haunting tale of religious extremism, fairy tale fantasy, & female empowerment. And... then there is this goat. A top ranked movie and witch film.

Day 28 of the 2025 Witch Film Festival

Spirited Away (2001)

Back to animation. Spirited Away is a breathtaking movie by Hayao Miyazaki. It's got not 1 but 2 witches in it and it tops many film lists - not just the witchy ones. Spirited Away is a great film for this time of the year.

Day 27 of the 2025 Witch Film Festival

Carrie (1976)

A Witch film? Some some yes. It's a 70s horror classic and one that many folks have their witchy horror go to lists. There was a sequel in the 90s and a remake more recently. Nothing is like the original.
