This is so right something that really crystallized for me in the kavanaugh hearings. I *would* consider exceptions for people actually willing to reckon with mistakes in their past, but the problem is that they never, ever are.
I actually do think that elected officials, cabinet members, & appointed judges should have lived basically perfect, exemplary adult lives
It should be the minimum barrier to entry. Scandal should be disqualifying, & I don’t care if it would disqualify otherwise brilliant people

I took a linguists class to fulfill an American studies-type requirement, called American Languages. I think about it ALL the time, probably at least weekly, and having a baseline understanding of the phonetic alphabet is really handy.

I wish more people said this. The *fact of a felony conviction* is not what makes someone immoral or unfit to have a position of trust and authority. Some people with felonies are immoral and unfit. Some people without them are immoral and unfit. Good Lord.

The whole "hard to believe the categorical approach yields these wonky arguments!" schtick isn't funny at all if you've spent more than like two hours of your life thinking about the categorical approach, which I hope all the justices have...
