Incidence clinical relevance and risk factors for thrombocytopenia in VV ECMO: a PROTECMO sub-study
This scientific interview is a part of our ISTH 2025 Daily Congress News series. Thrombocytopenia is a common complication in patients receiving venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO), with implications for bleeding risk and clinical outcomes. The PROTECMO study evaluated adults at various centers with VV ECMO for respiratory failure. In this sub-study of the international PROTECMO project, Nina Buchtele presents data from 652 patients. The analysis explores the incidence and clinical relevance of thrombocytopenia for targeted transfusion strategies, as well as associated risk factors, providing new insights into its management in the ECMO setting.
