This makes me sad. He was a hell of a writer. His 'Arcadia' is one of my favorite plays ever.

"Don't Engage, Just Block" is praxis
There’s likely an organized campaign going on to incite you to say stuff that’s gonna get you suspended or banned (or worse). The right has mentioned the Bluesky reaction to this incident repeatedly. They’re here to find targets. Don’t let them rile you up and goad you into something you’ll regret.

I got permission to share this, and I'm extremely grateful for that.

The Onion got this letter from one of our subscribers in Alaska. She works with dementia patients and decided to leave a copy in the car for each one.

This email made my year. Read it and you'll see what I mean. People are good.

One of my favorites #MosaicMonday
🎭It’s theatre time this #MosaicMonday with a troupe offering a comedic performance (the smiling masks are the giveaway!). The play itself we’re not sure about but the tambourine, small cymbals, and the double flute share a connection with the goddess Cybele.

Babel by R. F. Kuang Wow. I'm not sure what I expected but it wasn't this. This is a Nebula-winning book and probably would have won the Hugo too if the Chinese government had not 'disqualified' it. It's ostensibly about a group of young people who are trained at Oxford to be translators. Except translators are kind of magicians in this world.

One of my favorite places in the World.
More layers of history here.

The Cathedral of Syracuse incorporates into its structure substantial parts of the Doric Temple of Athena built by the tyrant Gelo to celebrate his defeat of the Carthaginians at Himera in 490BC.

Here, we see vast columns supported the nave and west wall.

Well, shit, I wouldn't have made it into the University of Chicago under this policy, and considering that I became the editor of the school newspaper and then the student ombudsperson for the university, maybe that would have been their loss.
Some of the most elite colleges in the US are making “civility transcripts” part of the admissions process.

Tone-policing as university policy.

Reading about the first Italian madrigals today and stunned to find that Machiavelli wrote the very first texts, purposefully for music to be sung as intermedi between the acts of his comedies 'La Clizia' and 'La mandragola'. @adapalmer.bsky.social.

Here’s the opening music for 'La Clizia' 1525:

I have no doubt the lecture fell on unlistening ears and an unwilling mind. Our vice president was there purely for a photo op with the Pope. He got it, and sadly for our vice president, that's all he will take away from meeting a better man than he. It's all he was capable of taking away from it.
I appreciate that one of his last acts was to have a cardinal lecture a sitting vice president about empathy.
