You are not obliged to let your moral compass spin with the election results. You have a right to hold unpopular opinions. You have a right to your own damn principles.

Remember that. Please.

It's becoming clear that a lot of people thought that the extended ACA subsidies existed until the shutdown ended, and it was the decision of Senate Democrats to fold that allowed them to be defunded which is..........not actually true.

There is no actual functional difference between an electorally successful "Third Party" and the Democratic Party, in that actual membership-based ideologically-disciplined political parties are not actually legal under US law, so we're just talking about ballot lines and electoral coalitions.
“Rather than taking over the Democratic Party the same way the right took over the Republican Party, we should take the easier route and just start up a new party ourselves!”

I’m about to fill my pockets with stones and walk into the sea.

NEW BLOG POST! I should probably have written this three years ago when it first came out, but Kate Beaton's DUCKS: TWO YEARS IN THE OIL SANDS is a genuine masterpiece and you should all read it.

It's incredibly frustrating how much time we waste debating things like the Sisko Agreements and the details of the Romulan detente while ignoring the life-changing work that hundreds of thousands of Federation bureaucrats show up and do EVERY DAY, without applause or acclamation.

Happy #MapMonday! Today we look at a world where the United Nations worked more-or-less as the creators imagined it would.

The thing about wanting Democrats to engage in a policy of confrontation with the government when they don't control any of the branches of power is that, definitionally, you are asking them to lose at least as often as not.

Probably the best take I've seen so far.

I think this might be the greatest video game ever invented, in terms of pure cost/benefit ratio and time invested.

I think taking this deal now was a bad tactical mistake, and also the stakes of it are a lot lower than people are pretending, given that nobody yesterday actually believed (or wanted?) the GOP to actually support extending the subsidies.

Finally finished S2 of THE APOTHECARY DIARIES; I feel like the show kind of loses focus every time it leaves the Inner Palace. Was honestly more interested in the pregnancy subplots that got resolved offscreen than in the coup d'etat that took up the whole season and didn't actually make any sense.

I would like to see some reckoning with this by people, to be entirely honest.
Yeah this part is darkly funny. Before this started, *many* people here insisted that Dems getting an ACA credit extension would be a massive GOP win (because 'TOUCH THE STOVE'!). Now many of the exact same people are denouncing it as a massive failure if they don't get one!
The goalposts keep moving on this too. If the outlines of this alleged deal are correct and it goes through and the GOP either welches on the promised vote/votes against extending the ACA credits, that’s what Bluesky wanted pre-shutdown, but now it’s the Dems selling out.

Every time I get into an argument with a Liberal Zionist, they insist that it is unfair to hold Israel accountable for the settlements or to judge the State by the Occupation, but they also oppose any attempt to create an actual legal distinction between the two.
They could simply choose not to do this.

A large share of politics coded as “left” on this site is in fact reactionary nostalgia - an inchoate belief that times were better in the good old days and nebulous forces have taken that from us.

ICYMI: I wrote something semi-topical for once, and did a deep dive into what NYC mayors have historically gotten up to after they left office.

It’s been a few days now since the historic victory of Zohran Mamdani in the NYC mayoral election, defeating Andrew Cuomo for the second time and winning over a million votes in a mayoral ele…

I would honestly pay any amount of money to see him argue this case in front of SCOTUS himself. I genuinely want him to explain, at length in a public forum, what he thinks tariffs are and how they work.
somebody's been informed he's losing the case

If Zohran Mamdani REALLY wants to make New York City safe for everyone, he'll adopt my proposal for the NYPD to train rats and equip them with go-pros and remote-controlled tasers to send into the sewers to maintain order and enforce the laws.

Remember, only a good rat can stop a bad rat!!!

Outraged at the implication here that Zohran Mamdani will follow in the footsteps of Chiang Kai-shek by turning on and massacring his communist allies in a vicious betrayal.

The traditional dynamic with Republicans is that they're ideologically opposed to health insurance but practically opposed to imploding the country they live in, so nothing happens. But given how rapidly intellectual standards are collapsing in the GOP, I don't know how much longer that can last.
Rick Scott is right, government funding for health insurance is such a scam.
