From "A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch's Dune: An Oral History"
Since Dune, Lynch has never ventured into full-on sci-fi territory again, but he almost did in the early '90s when Lucasfilm's Nilo Rodis-Jamero (a prominent designer on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi) approached him with the opportunity to write and direct an adaptation of the Japanese manga Domu: A Child's Dream. Written and drawn by Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame, the story follows an old man and a child possessing psychic powers who may be connected to 32 mysterious deaths within an apartment complex. Rodis-Jamero had struck a deal with Otomo and Bandai to produce the live-action film within a 12-month turnaround period. Lynch, who was by then cutting all of his film projects at Lucas' Skywalker Ranch, took to the idea immediately. Rodis-Jamero recalled in SlashFilm: I told David the opening scene, and before I could finish the opening scene, he said, "I'm in." David and I took it to Propaganda Films. They were the production company that did Wild at Heart for him. Unbeknownst to me, David and Propaganda Films' relationship was beginning to come apart. Propaganda was more interested in my sweetheart, my sweetheart being Bandai. "Why did Bandai give you this?" This being full production, full marketing and prints, and I'm nobody... They were more interested in getting that deal from Bandai than in making the movie for David and me. That's really when it started to come apart. Finally, my attorney told me, "You need to walk away from this. They're offering you money to walk away from this. Walk because with the turnaround, they're never going to be able to shoot the movie. You're never going to be able to get this shooting within so many weeks because the turnaround deadline is coming." So yeah, I walked away.

Just learned that David Lynch did a handshake deal in the early '90s to write and direct an adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's DOMU
