A Familiar Kind of Darkness Chapter 15: Mincemeat pairing: astarion/durge (M/F) rating: explicit word count: 52,463 Astarion has never been much of a distance runner; he’s better suited for a quick breakaway and a dash to the nearest hiding place. After the initial burst of sprinting, it’s hard to keep up with Vidri’s long, loping strides. Even with the help of her speed incantation, she’s constantly dragging him forward, and forward, and forward. Wolves bay in the distance. Cobbled streets fly under their feet. And all Astarion can think about is how supremely idiotic he is. I don’t want to. What a luxury to say. What a stupid mistake. He said those words, out loud, to a sister who would gladly sell him out for much less. He picked a side. Or at least, he didn’t default to the Master’s side, and that’s as good as disobedience. If Astarion ever falls back into Cazador’s grasp, he’s dead. Well and truly dead this time. All the more reason to run fast.

Astarion’s eyes slip closed, and his head falls back as if he’s in a great deal of pain. Or perhaps pleasure. Her blood pools into the seam of his mouth but does not travel beyond the tight press of his lips. He makes a small, soft sound low in his throat. It can be so difficult to tell the difference between happy and unhappy sounds. “Your lips look lovely in red,” she observes. Blood really is his color. “Have you ever painted your face before? A bit of rouge? A bit of kohl? It would suit you well.” That brings him back, as she hoped it would. He slits open his eyes to regard her acidly. Vidri smiles and sweetens her voice with innocence. “What? Something to say? Open your mouth and say it then.” He doesn’t, of course. The best he can manage is a sharp exhale through his nose, but she discerns the meaning all the same. She can almost hear the pout and pomp in his voice as he says something like, Obviously I’ve made myself up before. Plenty of times. But it’s hardly necessary with a face like this. She takes advantage of his silence anyway. “You haven’t? What a shame. I suppose I’ll have to paint you myself.”
