Topically, I love how basically every single "traditional county flag" was invented in the past fifty years.
a lot of people who were recording 'traditional festivals' didn't realize that they were constantly being made up/based on popular culture/what the guy doing it thought would be funny

the UK government has dropped its demand for a backdoor into Apple's encryption. This could open the door for Apple to bring back its Advanced Data Protection iCloud encryption to the UK for new users www.theverge.com/news/761240/...

In most of the world, bigger cities have stronger economies. It happens in France, the USA, the Netherlands, Belgium, and on, and on. But not in Britain. In Britain, the bigger a city gets the weaker its economy is, except for London. This costs us dearly.

I once heard Eric Adams described as "trying to win every interaction on a moment to moment level, leaving the overall experience incoherent and him coming off worse" and I sometimes wonder if that's not a good description of Starmer's government.

I remember an article about the re-development of the old Elephant and Castle shopping centre. All the interviews decrying "gentrification" came from middle class white people and all the actual shop-holders were like "It's great, the current place is falling to bits."

At the same time, Starmer will sit around wondering why people in the Midlands and North abandons Labour for other parties … when his government abandons them. Gee I wonder why his popularity and approval ratings are in the toilet - right where they belong.

The problem is the invocation of 'a threat to democracy'. Becasue try to stick in a couple of miles of cycle lanes (let alone 10,000) and you will be inundated with angry people vehemently denouncing you as undemocratic.

There is a real danger in normalising 'policy I don't like = undemocratic'.
Amidst hyperbole there is a good point in this: successive Governments have prioritised big, risky infrastructure projects over simple maintenance, 10,000 miles of cycle and bus lanes - which would have significantly improved health, the environment and growth.

Overblown infrastructure projects damage lives and imperil democracy. Why is Britain addicted to them? | George Monbiot
The Lower Thames Crossing proves the point. It’s a white elephant plan, sucking money from local projects that could actually improve lives, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot
