Wonder if my @cardiffuni.bsky.social leaders understand this? It’s an amazing bit of research and impact. It’s what humanities scholars at universities are so good at and necessary.
What's lost when we lose staff, departments, programmes and faculties in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and what's that got to do with organ donation?

Amid the looming losses faced by Cardiff, Edinburgh, Lancaster, Leicester and Nottingham (among many others), here's a worked example. 1/8

Shoes, shoes, shoes — a fine pair of flats I’d say
Here are three wonderfully preserved Roman shoes that were discovered at Bar Hill Roman fort on the Antonine Wall in Scotland in the early 1900s. Shoes made for men, women and children have been found there, reminding us that frontier zones were not an exclusively military environment. #FindsFriday

I strongly urge everyone to not just read this warning from @marcwatkins.bsky.social, but heed it, and be vocal and forceful pushing back against using AI to grade student writing. This must be anathema if we're going to have a world where learning means something. substack.com/inbox/post/1...

I recall a senior manager at a university I worked at observing that likewise archaeology graduates ‘Are like rats, you get everywhere’ - it was meant as a compliment. We can turn our skills to all kinds of diverse environments.

Buon #Ferragosto!

Fresco from #Pompeii (possibly from Fullonica of Sestius Venustus) and a unique example of a group of just women celebrating in what looks to be a rather wonderfully rowdy dining scene with upturned glassware, music being played and a woman holding aloft a ladle.

Delighted to find that Dr Eve MacDonald @gevemac.bsky.social has a new book out on Carthage which uses the latest archaeological research. Her 2015 book Hannibal A Hellenistic Life is still the best biography of Hannibal for me because it placed him in a wider context than the military exploits.

I read a superb new history of Carthage by Eve MacDonald - a finer cicerone than Flaubert - for @thetimes.com. My lead review today:

Don’t believe Roman lies — Carthage was civilised
In Roman propaganda it was a place of debauchery and child sacrifice, but in her new history Eve MacDonald shows that life in the ancient empire was surprisingly sophisticated

Annoyingly ethical is going on my bio
Coming for @toriherridge.bsky.social , who is the most annoyingly ethical person I know, is a particularly low blow. What is planting libellous and totally fabricated lies about someone’s ethics and expertise likely to do to their career? Huh?
