Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)
Tl;dr: The vast majority of adults will never have to interact with our age assurance systems and their experience won't change, because we know Discord and how people use it, so we're designing to respect privacy and deliver a safer experience while minimizing friction for adults. Hey folks – I’ve been on Discord since very early 2016 and actually joined the company in 2017. Safety is one of my areas, so today’s announcement on our blog is something I’ve been pretty involved with. I’ve always cared about Discord's approach to privacy (E2EE for A/V was another of my projects here), so I figured I’d add some more context to today's news. I can say confidently that the vast majority of people will never see age verification. I say this because we launched age assurance in the UK and Australia in 2025, and we have some pretty good data on this now. The idea here is that we can pre-identify most adults based on what we already know (not including your messages!), and that looks to get us pretty far here. No face scans, no IDs, for the vast majority of adults. And if you are one of the smaller subset of folks that we can't definitively pre-identify, then still, you only have to do it if you're accessing age-restricted servers or channels, or changing certain settings. That's really not most users. (Altho... might be more Redditors, tbh.) Last, I know that there is concern about privacy and data leaks. That's a real concern. The selfie system is built purely client-side, it never leaves your device, and we did that intentionally. That'll work for a bunch of users who aren't pre-identified as adults. But if you do end up in the ID bucket, then yeah, you're right that has some risk. We're doing what we can to minimize this by working with our range of partners (who are different partners than the data leak you read about), and if it's any help, we learned a lot internally from the last issue. But I get if that doesn't necessarily inspire more confidence. Anyway, we’ll be sharing more next month as we get closer to the global roll out about the system, including the technology behind it in March. I honestly wouldn't be happy if we didn't build something good and I am excited about what we’re launching, but please let us know what you think when we share more details. And I really appreciate everybody's feedback here today. We’re definitely reading it!

Panel 1: In december the under 16 ban went into affect Discord mandated age verification. Between Face-scan and providing a photo ID, I thought I was safe with a scan Panel 2: My account was insta-suspended in under a minute, I am over 30 years old and it identified me as under 13 Panel 3: Discord gave me an ultimatum: give them a photo of me holding my ID or never use my account again Panel 4: I tried arguing I feared for my privacy; they have leaked ID before, I tried arguing I'VE BEEN PAYING THEM FOR 8 YEARS. They didn't listen Panel 5: I couldn't talk to most of my overseas friends for a month Panel 6: Looking for advice online: Turns out victims of the UK/AUS ban had it better than the norm; at least a person saw my complaints. Most suspension tickets are auto declined by bots; I cannot envision Discord scaling this for worldwide fairly Panel 7: I eventually complied, I'm pretty luck; I could get away with an expired license Panel 8: Currently discord is being hammered by people cancelling nitro subscriptions, I'd cancel mine if they hadn't had done it for me already Panel 9: my advice is this: Ensure Discord isn't your only point of contact with your friends

As someone from Australia who was misidentified as a child by #discord face ID AI and had to go thru the fucking process of rectifying that (they auto shutdown your account so you can't even log in, the discord support is awful)

Please give them hell for me :)

@Nick_Davidov Asked Claude Cowork organize my wife's desktop, it stated doing it, asked for a permission to delete temp office files, I granted it, and then it goes "ooops" Turns out it tried renaming and accidentally deleted a folder with all of the photos my wife made on her camera for the last 15 years. All photos of kids, their illustrations, friends' weddings, travel, everything. It's not in trash, it was done via terminal It's not in iCloud, it already synced the new file structure. She didn't have Time Machine. Disc recovery tools can't see anything. I called Apple and they pointed me to a feature in iCloud allowing to retrieve files that were saved before but are no longer on iCloud Drive (they keep them for 30 days). I'm now watching it load tens of thousands of files. I nearly had a heart attack. So, just for the sake of clarity, the emails are about using games as a learning tool, not as a money extraction tool. Even the snippet that people are going around with doesn't even mentions microtransactions either. Emails 1 and 2 (https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA00960328.pdf) Epstein says he's meeting with someone and asks Pablos Holman to name some edutainment games. Holman responds saying edutainment doesn't really work unless you mask the learning (example being Call of Duty and Medal of Honor teaching war history and another hypothetical example being a game that teaches you Japanese by rewarding you with attractive women when you learn a new word). Emails 3 and 4 (https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA00695633.pdf) Epstein forwards Holman's message to Bobby Kotick asking for critique of what Holman is saying. Bobby Kotick (Activision CEO at the time) says it's a good idea but the key is real world rewards. You learn to read you get rewarded with cell phone minutes -or- iphone credits -or- virtual items in games Email 5 (https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%2010/EFTA01762201.pdf) Epstein forwards Kotick's response to Holman, Holman mentions indoctrinating kids into an economy and Kotick's example of real world rewards being virtual items in games. None of this relates to microtransactions at all really (unless someone stretches and say the learning to spend money = cool in-game items is what they are getting at, but judging by the emails that would wrong since that's not what they are talking about). Not only that but at least in CoD's case there was already an DLC framework in place with map packs and microtransactions in the form of gun camos in Black Ops 2 prior to these conversations.
