The goal of a protectionist tariff is not to raise revenue, it’s to stop the import of the tariffed good. His goal is to cause deadweight loss while at the same time collecting revenue. These are crossed purposes. The Trump/Musk economic policy is too stupid to properly communicate.
Trump says he’ll use revenue from tariffs to “offset” more big tax cuts.

Those tax cuts will disproportionately benefit wealthy Americans and big corporations.

But revenue raised from tariffs will be coming disproportionately from average working people.

It's another scam.

The United States: Spends billions of dollars and thousands of lives to establish itself as the nexus of the modern free trade order and achieve a level of development and prosperity never before dreamed of by man.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk: Ee are going to create an economic environment so toxic…

This is part of a trade war people need to think about. Countries don’t buy goods, people do. If the American government kills the good will of the international market it doesn’t matter what the tariff rate is, American business will suffer. #freetradefreelandfreepeople
Dear Mr. Jack Daniels,
Canada is your biggest market.
Maybe you should explain this to your legislators who threaten us.
We will take all the steps necessary to defend our nation from a hostile foreign power including filling the shelves with great Canadian whiskey.

Some Canadian provinces have removed US-made alcohol from shelves in response to US tariffs.

The shareholders of Tesla should seriously consider firing their CEO and moving to oust the Chairwoman who has allowed that CEO to become completely distracted in his duties to them.

Idk, aren’t their wasps that lay their eggs inside living bugs and then the larvae eat their way out of the still living host? That feels pretty messed up.
True statement that often makes me feel terribly sad ashamed of the world we live in. 😪🙏

A quote about the English Civil War that seems fitting: “Parliament went to war to protect a field of sacred cows and sacrificed each one in turn to propitiate the god of war.”
One philosophical divide I find between myself and more idealistic lefties: We both recognize folks on the right are willing to race to the bottom of morality to win control of culture and government, but they believe higher morals will eventually prevail and are willing to trade lives to test that.

Fun fact: it is bad to live in a country that regularly shuts down because it fails to pass the necessary legislation.

It is crazy making, if not unexpected, to watch Elon Musk openly be the man many on the right accused George Soros of being with no comment from the right.

I hold the (seemingly radical) belief that if you default to trusting scientific, civic & government institutions, you'll be safer, happier & more correct on average than those who default to distrusting institutions.

I see many lefties defending their celebration of the murder of Brian Thompson by pointing out people on the right who have celebrated other murders. I do not think pointing out that you are behaving no differently than those you often call heartless is the winning argument you think it is.

Violence is not a political action. When violence begins politics ends. When violence begins people become purely motivate by their survival and leave any concern for the common good behind.

The characterization of around a thousand years of European history as simply “dark” and that this supposed “darkness” is the fault of Christianity is reductionist and incorrect. The puritans started this polemic as an attack on continental Catholicism and there was never good scholarship behind it.

A mere 15 minutes of this post being live would seem to indicate to me no one on this app has trouble with callouses
I hate to be the one to say this… but the liberal callousness towards the majority of Americans is part of why they lost.
Liberals are going to need to develop some targeted callousness towards the majority of Americans, and fast.

I feel like I’ve been part of this grand experiment no less than six times now so we’ll see how this one goes
The deep goal of bluesky is to decentralize the social internet so that every individual controls their experience of it rather than having it be controlled by 5 random billionaires. Everyone thinks they signed up for a demuskified twitter...we actually signed an exciting and bizarre experiment.

Some time in the last 100 years “achieve the common good” became conflated with “get positive aggregate economic markers.” I think that is fundamentally the issue we face with keeping a liberal democracy going. Either we correct this or we will lose liberal democracy. Sorry Fukuyama.
