I enjoy finding these relatively old literature comments.

It definitely piqued my interest to see Clark et al's reconstruction of sea level for the past 4.5 million years, something I first heard about several years ago. However, upon reading it, I am very surprised that this was published. 🧵 1/11

Global mean sea level over the past 4.5 million years
Changes in global mean sea level (GMSL) during the late Cenozoic remain uncertain. We use a reconstruction of changes in δ18O of seawater to reconstruct GMSL since 4.5 million years ago (Ma) that acco...

Yes, we get a lot of “is this a meteorite?” inquiries at the survey.

Most often, the rocks are obviously not meteorites.

However today someone strolled in with this material. This is by far the densest material that I have ever held. It puts a typical VMS Ni-Cu ore to shame.

Anyone?

Congratulations to Mr. Mesich who successfully defended his MSc today at UWaterloo. It's been a pleasure serving as your co-supervisor with Dr. Ross.

This also surprised me quite a bit. Was observed all over the area to some degree. May need a ‘wildfire’ parameter on your Boreal cosmo ages! Hah
Fire-induced rock spalling! This area burnt about 1-2 months ago. All of the little rock shards on the ground are spalled pieces of the granite boulder, overlying burnt soil and moss.

Before seeing this in person, I didn't really consider the mechanical weathering effects of fire!

Sometimes you see the full scope of the chaos, then wonder what type of stories geologist made up when they could only see parts of said story.

July was the smokiest month on record in Winnipeg with 189 hours of smoke at the Airport. Temperatures were average, but it was much drier than normal.

It was also the driest January to July on record at the Airport with 126mm of precip. Normal is close to 300mm

The relentless 2025 fire season continues to put northern Manitoba communities under siege. Flin Flon, Lynn Lake and Island Lake earlier this summer. Snow Lake and Leaf Rapids right now.

It’s terrifying to think how bad this is going to get in a warming world. The Boreal is already feeling it.

It’s not just the number, the size of some of the bigger active fires doubled in size today under favourable south winds

This should be unbelievable. But it doesn’t seem like much is these days.
Maybe we should try raking

The fire situation in northwest Manitoba is nuts. Hard to comprehend the scale of these blazes. Every red dot is an active fire within the last 1-3 hrs.

Only going to get worse with a balmy 28C and gusts up to 40 km/h tomorrow with more lightning to follow.

Lynn Lake, Leaf Rapids evacuated.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

These Utah Mammoth jerseys are pretty awesome.

I think I may need to run our beer league team so I can make some executive decisions moving forward.

Hi geoscientists! For those who avoid journals that are profit-focussed and abuse academic free labour (e.g., Elsevier, Nature), take a look at CJES. Non-profit and a storied history. I just joined as AE - journals like this are run with heart and integrity and need your support.

We're thrilled to share that CJES, a @cdnsciencepub.com journal, will be joining the BlueSky community soon! Stay tuned for updates as we prepare to connect, share, and engage with researchers and science enthusiasts in this exciting space. See you soon! 🌟 #ScienceCommunication #BlueSky

In case there were any concerns that USA hockey players and management were inadvertent victims of political blowback… Canadians need to boo the fuck out of the US anthem for the foreseeable future. Like, make it so persistent and awkward they stop doing the anthem before games.

Gauthier et al (@mtrommelen.bsky.social) present a detailed analysis of the glacial and environmental history of MIS 3 (29-57 thousand years ago) sediments in southern Manitoba, Canada. For much of MIS 3, this location was occupied by Proglacial Lake Vita. ⚒️🦣🧪 🧵 doi.org/10.1017/qua....

This was a fun study. Neat area just east of the Red River ice stream preserving MIS 3 aged sediments less than a metre below ground surface.

Combing this study with on-going work in the HBL work indicates that the MIS 3 LIS margin was situated somewhere on the Canadian Shield - more to come.

New paper alert! We use till stratigraphy, pollen and optical dating to figure out that the Laurentide Ice Sheet stayed close to southern Manitoba during MIS. It did not significantly retreat, as has been previously hypothesized.
