A big one for me. Even before moving into journalism, I was trying to work out how to write about Reply 1988. Now, 10 years after its release, I'm in the BBC talking to the people behind it about how it remains one of *the* great televisual experiences and how it changed South Korean television
'Everyone can relate to it': How 2015 TV masterpiece Reply 1988 sparked the Korean drama boom
A decade ago, Reply 1988 launched. An emotional and nostalgic show about life in 1980s Seoul, it paved the way for other Korean global hits like Squid Game.

After years of being incensed by people calling shows "the next Squid Game" just because they're South Korean, I'm also back in @thedailybeast.bsky.social to talk about the next Squid Game, because it literally is Squid Game – albeit in 19th century Japan – and yet also somehow 10x better.
This Netflix Series Will Be Even Bigger Than 'Squid Game'
Forget all the previous headlines promising series that are “The Next ‘Squid Game.’” New series “Last Samurai Standing” doesn’t just fit the bill—it’s even better.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Steam's "Playable Without Timed Inputs" Tag Needs A New Developer Description - Access-Ability

A discrepency between tag name and developer description is causing an accessibility tag to be misapplied.

Happy birthday to the Microsoft Kinect, a device I dearly hope to never write about again. For @theverge.com, I recounted the history of its hacking and the echoes of an older, now unreachable, internet that resound in its story. Also, AI, because… 2025.

i hate that AI has now caused me to question the authenticity of cute animal videos online, which is my primary use of social media. i don't even know if this baby penguin actually wore a beret to go buy a tiny baguette in paris

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Fandom as we know it exists today because of female Star Trek fans. It’s just so frustrating to have women’s roles in sci-fi history denied, because it extends well beyond fandom and creates the perception that women haven’t contributed as much to society at large as men, which is violent erasure

I was invited to guest on Slate's ICYMI podcast to talk about Twitchcon's failure to protect streamers at their event, but also broadly the culture of entitlement toward female creators that's tied up with current right wing global politics.

Nothing like a fun, light hearted chat.

I ain't linking that nonsense article, but a reminder - hopefully among many - that Star Trek would not exist today without women. The Original Series would have been cancelled after Season 2, we wouldn't have Trek Conferences, and we wouldn't have got to see Gates McFadden boink a ghost.

Back at @theverge.com to point out that, cool as the suite of accessibility options in Kirby Air Riders is, suggestions floating around that this might be a turning point for Nintendo on accessibility are not only premature but ignore the weight of recent history – which is significant.
Kirby Air Riders’ impressive accessibility features are a rarity for Nintendo

For the BBC, I spoke to folks behind Re-Animator - including Jeffrey Combs - to elucidate the history of a bloody, super-fun, and innovatiove horror that keeps coming back even after 40 years.

(It's also one of my favourite films).
'Drowning in fake blood': How cult horror Re-Animator pushed the limits of gore
Forty years ago, the mad scientist comedy-horror was released to meagre box-office. But its shock value and outrageous humour soon made it a cult favourite among horror fans.

The thing that makes Star Trek utopian isn’t the end of scarcity or the harmony between all peoples it’s also that the guy on the ship who gets laid the most plays the trombone at work and periodically does community theater

For @theverge.com, I reviewed Easy Delivery Co., a game that might have been designed from a Venn diagram of my specific interests because it lets you play as a cat driving a kei truck in a snowy, mountain city (the existential dread is optional).
