None of the films Rock Hudson made w/ director Douglas Sirk are streaming — not even as a VOD rental.

But 4 of them are on TCM tonight starting at 8pm ET.

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate his centenary.

Here’s the last month of my life: Why, 40 years later, THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN is still invincible. I got quotes from pretty much everybody, there are multiple Jon Peters stories involved, and I had an extremely unpleasant interaction with the screenwriter www.indiewire.com/features/int...
What’s Fair Is Fair: Why ‘The Legend of Billie Jean’ Is Still Invincible, 40 Years Later
Helen Slater, Keith Gordon, Yeardley Smith, and Matthew Robbins tell IndieWire why a film that bombed is one of the true gems of '80s cinema.

I talked to Wes Anderson about his new film THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME and the darkness that has crept into his work in recent years. www.vulture.com/article/wes-...
Wes Anderson Explains the Darkness at the Heart of His Films
Even as his style has become even more ornate, the subjects he’s been tackling feel increasingly political. See: his latest, The Phoenician Scheme.

Okay. Let's try this again.

Here's a piece I wrote about Pee-wee Herman, the history and weaponization of the celebrity closet, and how cultural representations of closeted characters have changed over decades. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/12/t...

We need someone to give Amber Ruffin and her writers a platform so we can hear what she had planned for the WHCA dinner. Until then, watch her perfect response to the cowards who run that organization. youtu.be/rUlTIeKeTVA?...

I've been wanting to write a piece about Ken Burns' BASEBALL for sometime.

For @ebertvoices.bsky.social, I wrote about the importance of the Negro Leagues history recorded in part five SHADOW BALL, especially when the government is erasing Jackie Robinson.
How Ken Burns' “Shadow Ball” Connects Baseball's Past to Our Uncertain Future | Features | Roger Ebert
To watch the fifth episode of Ken Burns' "Baseball" is to see exactly what makes the sport great as a metaphor for the country.

Starting this Monday, it’s time to podcast once more.

@scottrenshaw.bsky.social and I are teaming up for Mousterpiece Melodies, a new podcast all about the songs of Disney movies.

Our first episode is on the songs of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (and also the new film).

Get excited.

Presenting our Top Ten films of 2024. In honor of David Lynch, for whom words of analysis were somewhat inimical to cinema, we acknowledge that this magazine’s writing has only ever been an attempt at understanding that which we often cannot fully grasp.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Ned Comstock was a great help to me during my research for Pictures at a Revolution, pointing me toward material I never would have known to look for. So many film books are better because of his vast knowledge and the interest he took in writers and researchers. RIP.
So very sorry to hear heartbreaking news of the passing of USC #cinema archivist Ned Comstock. He was amazing, kind and so knowledgeable. Have known him since the 1980s. Cannot imagine doing extensive research for my dissertation or books without his gracious, invaluable expertise. #RIP #NedComstock
