SEPTA and PRT have a two year window of no service cuts or fare hikes. But small agencies across the state that connect rural communities or get seniors to medical appointments are already preparing for austerity. Via @katehuangpu.bsky.social

Without state aid, small PA transit systems face service cuts
With recurring state funding off the table, transit systems outside Philly and Pittsburgh are preparing for service cuts, fare hikes, and hiring freezes.

The whole MAHA thing is funny. I don't doubt that we could do with fewer plastics and color dyes. But isn't the real problem obvious? Humans evolved to walk long distances, every day, and eat whatever trash we found along the way. But contemporary Americans literally never walk.

Importance of train frequency:

(1)

Fiancé and I took transit to the airport in Chicago today:

》Trip involved two trains, with a connection
》Both trains coming at frequent headways, so you never had to wait long, worry about missing a connection, or check a schedule.

If homes are expected to be a strong investment, and appreciate faster than inflation, then home prices will take on an ever growing % of living costs.

It's unsustainable for housing to indefinitely grow as a % of living costs, but it's politically difficult to unravel it as an investment.
really feels like housing affordability is one of the most important political issues of our time, affecting nearly every aspect of our lives, and everyday our mainstream political discourse is about whether sour cream is woke or not

Passing a statewide transit funding plan is vital to prevent service cuts and fare hikes, ensuring SEPTA can support the region during the FIFA World Cup and the nation's 250th birthday celebration next year. For more information visit wwww.septa.org/fundingcrisis/. #ISEPTAPHILLY #HowWeRoll

I wrote an Op-Ed about SEPTA funding and how our Agency is actually one of the most efficient in the country with handling money.
The last thing we need is for SEPTA to get defunded, enjoy the gift link 🤙

Without public transit, nobody moves!

Today the #PaHouse passed the Public Transportation Trust Fund Transfer Act to invest almost $300 million into mass transit funding for all PA counties!

To my #PaSenate colleagues, let’s keep Pennsylvania going and fund our public transit! #FundTransit

SEPTA is in danger.

This is the culmination of a decades-long crisis and will take state, county, & local action to truly address.

To understand how to strengthen @septaphilly.bsky.social, we need to understand how we got here.

I've put together an explainer to help:

Trains only run if there are riders.

We need more SEPTA riders.
We need more SEPTA voters.

And the most effective and sustainable way to create SEPTA riders and voters is to let more people live near SEPTA stations.

When vacancy rates rise, rents fall. It's the most robust finding in housing. If you want housing costs to fall, you have to build.

Three options, each uglier than the previous:
- Local govs/transit agencies get ability to levy a tax
- Fares get hikes massively
- Service gets eviscerated

And, imo, eviscerating service is the hardest to come back from

Will be the first time since the 1980s that the MTA basically gets its ask without a ton of Albany/gubernatorial meddling or a crisis.
Hearing the NY budget will fully fund the MTA’s $68 billion 2025-2029 capital program

The price of housing is set by supply and demand; and we can observe the balance between supply and demand by looking at vacancy rates.

Low vacancy rates give landlords power to jack up rents.

Housing abundance empowers tenants to demand cheaper rents.

Everyone with money on the line knows this!
