Retired union rep, at home in Oregon, which I love. I travel when I can afford it, interests in human origins, photography, fly fishing and restoring our US public lands. Blazer fan, because it's still ok to have fun.

The NYT is begging us to stop paying attention to it. Why won't we listen?

We are going to witness the destruction of human minds in staggering and innumerable ways in the coming years.

I sure hope this is talked about in houses of faith this weekend and more leaders come out to this and other locations where ICE is kidnapping and detaining our neighbors.

I want to ask him if he can see his house from there.

I wish men as a group were better people. Maybe someday.

This was often a conversation I had to have with union members during contract bargaining. Displays of anger should be rare and strategic, not the bar to get over to show you're passionate about something.

I do think that we can fall into the trap of thinking, believing, or acting like getting angry is the way to show that we care about something. I've had the conversation where folks think that if you are not screaming you must not care. We need social validation so, sometimes, off we go.

I wish I knew. Silence isn't an option, there aren't any magic ways to make people care about something they don't want to care about. I'm trying to not argue with people; rather verbally model behavior I'd like to see in others. I have no idea if that works either, but at least it's not conflict.

Yeah I meant 2028 in the above post. It's getting late,

The only thing that will help this country is massive revolt at the ballot box and in the absence of the ability to prosecute people who have been pardoned, a South African style truth commission. Hopefully there will be lots of state charges that can't be pardoned. That would be nice.

No. I really don't. Here is what will happen. The DoJ will stonewall the files in defiance of congress and the courts and nothing will happen. Then the R's will either win in 2026 and nothing will happen or they will lose in 2026 and Trump or Vance will pardon everyone on the way out and nothing...

Yeah, don't the MTG bait. Nothing is going to come of it except legitimizing her.

You are on track. These are emails received from his estate, not the Department of Justice's criminal files on him. The DoJ files are what the "Epstein Files" have referred to.

It's important that we not let allegations of Trump giving head to Bill Clinton distract us. No, we must always remember that there are more important issues before than the alleged skullduggery.

Thank you - this is so important.

It's why I think combatting despair and doomer narratives is important not just for its own sake (because we deserve better), but also for deliberately refusing to do this government's work for them.

For well over a decade now, the Republican Party has been less about using state capacity to enforce bigotry than using the power of the state to *crowdsource* bigotry, to make life harder and less livable for disfavoured groups. Make bigotry less shameful, make bigots openly proud of their bigotry.

In order to fight, you have to understand the battlefield. Our problem space, right now, looks more like Hungary than 1930s Germany. Still very bad, but also not one where we're seriously staring down the possibility of concentration camps for trans people.

Anyone talking about "extermination lists" right now is not to be taken seriously. Not because it's impossible, but because crowing about that here and now, when much resistance remains possible and is even starting to succeed, amounts to some Tokyo Rose/Lord HeeHaw level propaganda for the enemy.

I'm not opposed to primarying people that need it. Now is time to take that on, not in the three months after the Dem national convention. If people hate candidate X, waiting till he or she has the nomination to start tearing into them is what fucks us up every time.
