There was no winning move: Why Dems did better than people think in the shutdown endgame; why everyone thinks they did so badly; and why those who wish the GOP had ended the filibuster now are way wrong. goodpoliticsbadpolitics.substack.com/p/shutdowns-...
Shutdown's End
There was no winning move - but the Democrats played it better than people think.

I think it’s worth keeping in mind how dangerous playing the turning the suffering up dial to make my opponents look bad is to play. it’s terrible that the two parties aren’t equally sensitive to suffering but it’s suffering nonetheless
the discourse on shutdown stuff from “the base” is predictably completely out of hand now - by the tone of the discussion think that there weren’t hundreds of thousands of people going without pay and a literally imminent drop off on desperately needed food stamps

If people lose their ACA subsidies because republicans slashed them and refused over and over again to even try to restore them, which of those people is going to look at those increased price tags and say “goddamn I blame democrats for not using their leverage”? Listen to yourselves.

*whispers* Y'all are just going to hate the next leader of the Senate Dems too because, fair or not, this anger is still REALLY about us losing in November of 2024 more than anything.

And that's ok.

I just wish people would own that is what they're really mad about 🤷‍♂️

so today I've seen Chuck Schumer called a "Kapo" a "baby killer" and a "genocide apologist" all because of a bill he does not support and didn't vote for....

but you know... it has nothing to do with him being Jewish......

the first thing (well second) the GOP would pass in a post filibuster world rn is some of the craziest transphobic laws imaginable, a total nationwide ban on transitioning

so hard pass on the filibuster ending under a Republican Congress and Trump Presidency
The Democrats erred by not forcing Republicans to nuke the filibuster. But there was nothing Democrats could have done to get the ACA subsidies extended, because Republicans control all three branches and strongly believe that only rich people should have access to decent healthcare
You can criticize Senate Democrats for capitulating but Donald Trump and Republicans are the ones destroying the ACA.

if AIPAC controls both parties why doesn’t big pharma control either party

ok Big Pharma spends so, so much more money on lobbyists for both parties than Israel does

Big Pharma clearly does not control the government

why do people attribute things like the shutdown to AIPAC when clearly lobbying money cannot even protect Tylenol from being slandered

The reason Democrats can't do anything more than sometimes stall the Republicans before they destroy something is because not enough Democrats were elected to stop them, so embracing a "primary and replace every Dem" strategy which will prob lead to even fewer Dems in Congress seems less than ideal

Republicans: Fuck the ACA

Democrats: You won't let babies starve just to take away health care

Republicans: The hell we won't
Republicans: Sue to force people to go hungry

Democrats: Well, fuck. We can at least get hungry babies fed
Democrats: Vote to feed babies

Bluesky: FUCK THE DEMOCRATS

It can be deeply terrifying to realize you're surrounded by tens of millions of people who want to destroy everything you love, but there are also tens of millions of people who want to fight them! They have a political party that you should want to be a part of!
I think one aspect of this is some people are basically unable to psychologically process the reality that way too many republicans exist in raw numbers in this country.

I don't agree with the decision to vote by the Dems, but I do think a lot of folks really don't grasp how much suffering is on the table if this shutdown continues.

Between federal workers, SNAP beneficiaries, and others, that's a lot of pain to swallow for not a lot of gain.

As Trump continues to argue for the authority to starve American children, and a handful of Democrats vote to fund the government (and with it SNAP), Mike Johnson is still on vacation and this website can't stop talking about how mad they are at Chuck Schumer.

It’s hard to believe now, but Republican politicians used to care about things other than obstructionism, destroying the government, and staying in office.

They don’t have to be like this now. It’s a choice they’re making.

I'm really tired of this cycle while Rs burn our country to the ground

I have always been a Democrat and I always will be. To walk away from them now is exactly what Republicans want. After last week's election they are worried. Trump is terrified. Show them we are disappointed but united, and that they have a reason to be worried. It will make them very nervous.

BTW, this is a really important message. For better or for worse, there's only one vehicle for effective opposition to democratic backsliding in this country, and that's the Democratic Party.

I mean, at the very least use it as an opportunity to attack Republicans. "It turns out Republicans are willing to burn down the whole government rather than agree to lowering health care costs for working families. So be it. If you don't like that, vote for Democrats next year."

As one of the "base": They were never going to win with a shutdown. Too much of the GOP caucus actually likes a shutdown. The Dems were aiming a gun at their own head threatening to shoot if ACA subsidies weren't extended. It was never going to work.

you may say they could have gotten more, clearly the leadership thought so, but acting like the Republicans got everything is silly doomerism bullshit.

People REALLY need to stop thinking of their vote as a special treat they'll only give to Democrats when they've done a good-enough job, or even a less-worse job than the Republicans. Framing a blue vote as something you're doing FOR the Dems is a mistake.

YOU'RE DOING IT FOR *YOU*, STUPID.

THEN JUST TALK SHIT ABOUT THE GOP.

If you talk shit about the Dems, guess what? So are the GOP. You're doing their job.

Anyway.
