It would be really great if more people in the tech industry spoke up about what these technologies are doing to our planet. It was already in crisis before everyone got in a race to build data centers for AI.
Each time you ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water.

A 🧵on our investigation into how the data centers that power AI are increasingly being built in highly water-stressed places:

The AI Boom Is Draining Water From the Areas That Need It Most
A Bloomberg News analysis finds that roughly two thirds of new data centers built or in development in the US since 2022 are in places with high levels of water stress.

Intel's Pentium processor (1993) can compute sines, logarithms, and other special functions. To do this, it has a ROM with 304 floating-point constants. I reverse-engineered this ROM and extracted the constants. You can see pi in the ROM, binary 11.001001..., encoded in the transistor pattern. 1/n

This was my tenth(!) year building 25 days of puzzles for #AdventOfCode. You can solve them all for free! Most people write code to solve them, but you can solve them however you like. I hope they help people become better programmers. 🌟

The @kubernetes.io Release team minted the v1.32.0 RC0 artifacts just now. Can you please kick the tires and create issues if you see any problems? Thanks!

Pretty handy to quickly start a kind cluster with the artifacts from:

I need an eye-watering amount of money. You don't have any connection to the UK to donate.

What I really need though, is international exposure for my case.

Any journalists want to write about a hacker's quest to resolve their bureaucratic nightmares by hacking the UK's legal conception of gender?
Four weeks to court. I have a strong case to be the first person legally recognized as neither male or female in the UK. Then it'll be easier for the next person, and harder for other countries to keep forcing binary gender onto people it doesn't fit.

But my lawyers can't work this case for free.
Gender Recognition for Non-Binary People in the UK
I'm a non-binary cybersecurity expert from California. I want a Gender Recognition Certificate to match my birth certificate, but the UK has refused to issue one. I'm taking them to court for it.

Elizabeth Warren supported FOSTA/SESTA, and also cosponsored a bill to ban sex workers from having bank accounts.

I've said this for years: she is not a friend to queer people. She represents the same Puritanical ideology as conservatives, just wrapped in the language of liberal populism.
I wrote about Elizabeth Warren co-sponsoring KOSA even AFTER Marsha Blackburn said KOSA was necessary to "protect minor children from the transgender in our culture." There's simply no excuse for Warren not to understand what KOSA will do. www.techdirt.com/2023/10/03/s...
Senator Elizabeth Warren Supports Bill To Silence LGBTQ+ Voices
At this point, any Senator signing on to support KOSA cannot deny that the bill has been written explicitly to suppress LGBTQ+ voices. The Heritage Foundation said so directly earlier this year. An…

It's not religion behind the resurgent moral panic about LBGTQ people in the USA. You don't get a 15% shift beliefs in a year due to growing religious sentiment. It's cynical opportunists trying to ride to power on populist sentiment by delegating and demonizing an outgroup.

Fuck every one of them.

Yes. Also, a lot of the anti-trans “journalists” make these kinds of noises about wanting data, but they are really just after something that will confirm their bigotry. And often that’s anecdotes that fall apart when they’re examined.
I'm always thrown by how the guys who claim to want to see lots of data are shown lots of data on the effectiveness of transition care and other forms of trans medical care, but they reject it because it doesn't "feel" right to them, thus allowing them to get easily snowed by charlatans and ghouls.
I can't stop thinking about this section of the Atlantic profile of CNN CEO Chris Licht.

This "You can't even ask questions anymore!" stuff is BS.

Licht has hired 0 trans people as on-air talent. Who's really being "silenced" here?
