A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

The WI has been trans inclusive since the 70s, before I was born. Do you see who in this scenario was innocently minding their own business, coming to their own arrangements locally? Do you see who is forcefully imposing themselves and their demands upon others, via threats.

Your annual reminder that the most revealing difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic is definitely in the words for December: Mí na Nollag (Month of Christmas) in Ireland, and An Dubhlachd (the Blackness) in Scotland. So once again may I wish you all a lovely Blackness.

It was a year ago today that I drove 60 miles and returned home with a Wee White Cat. Today, she saw off her mortal enemy, the Bold Black Cat, in a dining room showdown. Another standout moment of the kind of Cat Drama that is my life now.

For though she be but little, she is fierce. ❤

It's both reassuring and depressing to know that, according to my laptop, I can thwart facial recognition technology simply by my morning face.

On National Poetry Day, may I share my brother-in-law Allan's awesome poem, written when he was a teenager.

I cannot stress this strongly enough: Support your local theatre, café, bookstore, bakery, and library. We breathe life into these places when we support them. They need us, and more importantly, we need them.

Today I will seek out a garden centre, buy a little snow-in-summer, and then plant it in the stump of the cherry tree that the winds blew down.

Yesterday, France celebrated independent bookstores with a national day of support — a brilliant move to protect culture against giant corporations like Amazon. 🇫🇷📚

This is the kind of idea the whole world should embrace! 🌍❤️

PLEASE don’t buy into Amazon’s booksale this week.

They are intentionally trying to eat into profits from Indie Bookstore Day this weekend, a really important annual event for our important community institutions.

Check out your local fave or bookshop.org.

I have removed the wee cat's blanket for washing, and she is Not Happy. After pacing and yowling a bit, she is now perched on the arm of the sofa next to the place where the blanket Ought To Be.
