Depressingly there is more talk in many places about race and ethnicity, and how certain visible characteristics - most obviously skin colour - define people. This is squarely in the identity discussion; ie, people defining their own identity via these visible characteristics

Recent funding cuts have affected all levels of science, but as we learned from the effects of the pandemic, early career researchers are likely to be the most vulnerable.

Listening to Kamala read her book, The Truths We Hold, and I really the content and her narration. Two funny (?) observations -- she reads 911 (emergency) as "nine eleven," and she pronounces "Latinx" like Hailee in Overcompensating.

If you told me a year ago that I'd be listening to a conman and a 14 year heroin addict who had brain worms come out with a claim of solving both etiology and treatment for autism in one month, something armies of scientists and clinicians couldn't do in a hundred years, I'd laugh in your face.

The CEO of a a multi-trillion dollar company went to the White House, openly handed the US president a gift made of gold, and his company got a special exemption to tariffs the president has illegally imposed.

Also, the Founders took bribery so seriously the Constitution bans it 3 separate times.

Universities are throwing all the minorities they so proudly exploited for their brochures and ads under the fascist clown bus, and hopping on to maintain their comfort. Much like the Nazis in 30s, Christofascist Americans are destroying institutions of knowledge and, with them, the minorities.
Just read the Brown University agreement and this really jumped out.

"The University will not perform gender reassignment surgery or prescribe puberty blockers or hormones to any minor child for the purpose of aligning the child's appearance with an identity that differs from his or her sex."

#CPConf2025 was a blast, so many cool talks and posters. Shout-out to the organizers for selecting our EHR symposium and to the EHR team for helping me put it together! Special thanks to Greta, Itunu, Lea*, and Julia* (*who could not make it to Tübingen) for making this symposium a reality.

Since WWII, America has led the world -- economically and in so many other ways -- in no small part because of its willingness to spend on basic research and its ability to attract the world's best and brightest.

That is changing -- fast. My deep dive on the topic:

Harvard has also, in Columbia's footsteps, decided to try to placate Trump by bending over backwards to make itself into something it is not and it cannot become. But to accommodate present-day American conservatives, Harvard must first give up its motto and replace it with its antonym.

The United States has abdicated its role of an economic and intellectual leader for conspiracies and fascism. This, as a consequence, will result in the rest of the West, which has willingly played a second fiddle to the US in these domains for decades, to deteriorate similarly.

What's happening in TX is a direct consequence of DOGE, Trump, & Republicans continuously undercutting, underfunding, & destroying systems & infrastructures that are needed for maintaining a civilized & safe society. No amounts of billions in military and paramilitary funding can compensate for it.

I wish I could hold y'all's hands when I tell you this, but it doesn't matter. 99% of Americans could be rabid for increasing funding for medical research, as long as that 1% that makes decisions doesn't care for it, it's not happening.
A reminder of what Americans support via #CHIP50:

84% say we should invest the *same or more funding* for science research next year

90% say we should invest the *same or more funding* for medical research next year

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.
