Attagirl! We need more advocates in our long COVID corner!
“We are told by leaders that we are the future. But when it comes to the ongoing pandemic, our present is being stolen right in front of our eyes.”

Incredible speech by Violet Affleck who warned about the ongoing dangers of COVID & Long Covid, & advocated for masks and clean air at the UN today!

When you wear a mask, you’re practicing radical self care and community care.

You’re protecting yourself from COVID and other airborne diseases, while also committing to breaking chains of transmission.

You’re ensuring you don’t get anyone else sick.

Masking is an act of resistance.

This is very bad. Although entirely predictable. Once more the humanities are being cut back to prop up STEM and, increasingly, AI investment (including at the expense of bench science). In the past, cuts to humanities were promoted on two separate logic streams that do not hold true: /1
Dean at U of Chicago: “She also expressed concerns that the administration might be asking the Arts & Humanities Division to cut back to compensate for other divisions’ financial challenges, asking whether ‘our entire unit [is] being used to float other units facing cuts.”
UChicago Arts & Humanities Division to Restructure Amid “Historic Funding Pressures”
“The status quo is not an option,” Deborah Nelson, dean of the Division of the Arts & Humanities, wrote to division faculty on June 18.

You don’t truly care about disability rights & #immunocompromised rights & accessibility & inclusion if you’re not wearing a mask in public spaces

Excluding a certain group isn’t inclusive

Disability is the only marginalized community that is always hiring. If you won't respect us as we are, at least respect us because you will become us.
Anyway reminder that solidarity is not transactional, and giving into eugenics is, among other things - deeply embarrassing.

With enough time and luck, disability is coming for all of us. Do yourself a favour and start dealing with the hole in your politics now 💕

People who don’t include disability liberation in their understanding of social justice will never make sense to me.

Like what do you MEAN you oppose sexism, racism, and classism, but the minute the lived reality of that oppression starts showing up physically, all your energy just evaporates?

"We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests."

100% this. We are being erased from the public space.
Disabled people have been trying to warn the public for years that “you do you” Covid policies were leading to increased discrimination and eugenics attitudes.

When States began criminalizing masks, we pleaded for support. We asked our peers to wear a mask in solidarity. 🧵

At my kid’s sporting event. New club. New parents to meet. They see my FloMask. I say, “Covid hates me. When I got it I missed 6 months of work.” They smile and say oh that’s horrible & they understand. They never consider that their maskless faces affect my safety or that they are at risk, too. 😷🙄

I fought through day 2 post-Thanksgiving PEM to take my artsy kid to the local holiday craft fair. I saw more people wearing heavy duty masks than I have in a long time. I also didn’t get any dirty looks at my FloMask. I wonder what’s up…😷

When our plans for an outdoor brunch were foiled by closed restaurant patios, my friends scrambled to find a bar with outdoor fire pits that allows carry in food, just so I could join them. I cried a little bit as they happily sat in 40 F and said this can be our winter spot.
