Jamaican Maroons use the abeng, an important instrument in their culture, to convene meetings in their towns, announce important news, and on special occasions, such as the annual Accompong Maroon Festival, which is being celebrated today. +

I can confirm everything jn this piece of article. I may be Haitian-Canadian but most of my family are Haitian-American. Nowadays, they have church services online and before the sermon they really have all the immigration information. They even raise money for lawyers and help out with everything.
> the people keeping their communities informed aren’t reporters.
> They’re the pastor who delivers immigration updates before the sermon. The barber who streams local politics on Facebook Live.
> The WhatsApp moderator running a rumor-control operation that outperforms the mayor’s office.

No coverage of this in The West has even broached the fact that Cuba & Venezuela are actively not fighting back during a livestreamed war crime

It's like they're trying to build a similar vacuum to that of Palestine coverage. Then if they do fight back it becomes proof that they needed pacification
"It said on Sunday that there would be two days of mourning on ‌January 5 and ‌6 in honour of those killed and said ‌funeral arrangements would be announced."

For tonight’s full moon, the last supermoon of 2025, I thought it would be on point to feature “Moonshine Dolly” by Jamaica’s 2021 Poet Laureate Olive Senior. It’s a haunting poem about a Jamaican children’s game that youngsters played on moonlit nights in times past.

Birds have been chirping since this morning and our Julie mango tree presented us with another late-season fruit. This might be its end, so I’m even more grateful for its faithful provision. Hurricane Gilbert claimed our East Indian mango tree.

This year I wrote a book about how Columbus colonized the Caribbean in 1492 - not what is now the US mainland.

My book DARK LABORATORY celebrates Kalinago survivance and the African agrarian x aquatic traditions people like my ancestors, who were enslaved, brought to the region.

When the Maroons were almost starving, Nanny pondered surrendering to the British. In a dream, a voice told her to wait 1 more day. When she awoke the next morning, she found 3 pumpkin seeds in her pocket. She planted them on the side of a mountain now known as Pumpkin Hill.

Forgot that October is #CaribbeanFolkloreMonth but I'm here now! One of my favourite pieces of folklore is around the silk cotton tree. These trees are revered/feared as sacred trees that are both the homes for duppies/jumbies (ghosts) and portals to other dimensions.
