Getting several responses to my "here are some tips to communicate your science to the public" thread along the lines of "if other people don't understand what I do, it's because they're stupid and that's not anything I can fix."

If you believe this, you are a bad teacher and a bad scientist.

I understand the human instinct. I’d want to do the same.

But that’s why no individual should be given the power to pardon members of their family.

Another word for this is "corruption." It is wrong to abuse public positions for personal profit.

"Good palliative care and assisted dying are not at odds. They are not in conflict. they both aim for the same thing: a good death, surrounded by the people you live, with minimal pain and without fear."

Thank God someone said it out loud. MPs criticising the lack of time are entirely correct. It would just be helpful if they actually complained about that for other bills as well.

There is no evidence for the view that assisted dying leads to a decrease in palliative investment. Instead, there is extensive evidence that assisted dying leads to an improvement in palliative care.

Freddy Mercury died of AIDS 33 years ago today. With modern medical technology, he likely would have lived. Never forget how much progress against major infectious disease has been made in a short time. We are at risk now of rolling back much of that progress.

It doesn't seem fashionable to say so, but it's your patriotic duty to pay tax. Taxes are the dues we pay for living in civilisation.

By all means, we should make sure they are well spent. But dodging them and avoiding them is unseemly.

If you bring central London to a halt in order to campaign against catastrophic climate change then you're a "barmy" eco "fanatic" who deserves to be locked up.

If you do the same to hang on to your multimillion pound inheritance tax exemption then you're a brave freedom fighter defying the odds

How privatisation works (and Thames Water is just the latest example).
1. A government takes a national asset built up with taxpayers' money and the work of public servants over many years, and hands it, for a fraction of its value, to a private company.
2. In doing so, it creates a monopoly.
