ultimately i think the central thesis of trumpism might be true nihilism, just the absolute disdain for the idea that anything matters at all beyond winning an argument in the eyes of your supporters. there is no such thing as competence. there is only loyalty and occasionally bad press. that’s it

there's "charitable interpretation" and there's "being a mark" and the inability or refusal to distinguish between the two is practically a credential in some circles
The adamant elite refusal to call bullshit is a big part of How We Got Here.

I think it's important to remember that, at least in childhood, this is compulsory and violently enforced and not a simple act of choice.
At some point we most societally reckon with the fact that men are raised to be uncomfortable with emotions, with their sexuality, with their vulnerability, and how to process challenges, and that there is a massive movement built to give them convenient reasons not to do so.
