I'm watching Inheriting the Wind tonight and it's a good movie. It's hard to imagine evolution being such a legally controversial issue.

Something I've been working on is a way to turn TikTok recipes into a structured recipe page that my girlfriend can collect instead of scrolling through a grid of video thumbnails.

I bought another bookshelf last year to handle my collection of books. Somehow I'm once again in need of another bookshelf.
Me: We have too many books.

My husband: We have inadequate shelf space.

Is it possible to move into economic populism without needing to fight a culture war too?
Honestly grateful to Douthat for this accessible distillation of this point of view. Going to be a great teaching tool that generates lots of conversation.

Fantastic news for all New Yorkers. It's time to build. Everywhere. For everyone.

The election results out of NJ are quite surprising. For Cape May to just get barely 50% is astonishing.

Who died and put the Pope in charge of Christian doctrine?

The previous pope!

I think it's good the mayor of the world's most globalist city is a rootless cosmopolitan
I find it so fascinating that even in a post explicitly claiming "I don't care" about being racist or not, they still engage in desperate verbal gymnastics to avoid acknowledging it. Like she's still too cowardly to say "I know this is racist but", has to be "I know people will call this racist but"

Seems very legit
O'DONNELL: Why did you pardon Changpeng Zhao?

TRUMP: Are you ready? I don't know who he is

O'DONNELL: His crypto exchange Binance helped facilitate a $2b purchase of World Liberty Financial's stablecoin. And they you pardoned him.

TRUMP: Here's the thing -- I know nothing about it

At a Day of the Dead party tonight. I think we don't really talk enough about how Mexico is, like the US, a bunch of different people and cultures coming together to form a single nation.

A JWST wonder, once again! 🔭

This is the image of the NGC-2440 planetary nebula as seen by the JWST one year ago, that I processed last night! Look how wonderful that thing is 😍
And if you zoom on the centre, you can see a little dot which is suspect is the white dwarf!

People keep saying New York City is safe but there are tons of ghosts wandering the streets

Mamdani seems set to win in New York. He has charisma but I don't think his victory works well outside of New York. There aren't many places where the majority of residents rent and a majority of residents take public transit.

Really this is overpromising. You can't just throw money at states and collapsing towns. Federal healthcare already throws a ton to rural communities and it's not enough.
How do we save rural hospitals?

Medicare for All.

It's amazing how solar really snuck up on us
IEA: between 2025 & 2030, the world will likely build 4.6TW of clean power.

"That’s nearly double the amount built over the previous 5-year period, which was in turn more than double the amount built across the 5 years before that. Put differently, the growth has essentially been exponential."
Chart: Solar is driving renewable energy to new heights around the…

Cloud services are concentrated because apps like Signal choose not to spend the billions on their own data centers. And who'd want to? Infrastructure is expensive and low-margin. But the alternative is that apps like Signal wouldn't exist. Can there be a better way?
📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

I agree with @chriscoyier.net there are a lot of great reasons to build a website. And with modern web hosting platforms it's easier than ever to do it.
