Obviously things have got dramatically worse in the US recently, and I don't want to diminish that, but I've been at *so many* conferences in the UK on topics like empire, humanitarianism and development where multiple speakers from the Global South have been denied visas or held at the border
I just attended a conference in the US. We had one speaker detained and two others turned away at the border.
There are great conferences and science in the US, but with the way things are right now, it’s too risky to attend.

I find “people don’t actually know how things work” has a lot of explanatory power.

I don’t mean this in a holier-than-thou way. I’m only vaguely aware of how my microwave or the car radio work. A lot of modern life is assuming the functioning of complex tech and models.

Today a senior exec from Taylor & Francis replied confirming that T&F journal articles *are* and will continue to be provided to its AI partners for model training, with *no opt-out*. Guess we know where we stand now - academics are creators of data for value generation by Big AI and publishers
As a T&F journal editor - where we publish a lot of critical work on AI - I think it's ethically essential the publishers - all of them - get fully transparent about their AI training partnerships with Big Tech cos fast. It's an awful situation because academic authors are truly locked in... (1/2)
I will continue working on this and try to make sure HAS NOT also translates into WILL NOT/WILL NEVER. I have asked for an official statement of this which I can share with journal editors, who are worried about the possibility of boycotts.

Musk is intruding into an area of my expertise: investor-state arbitration (sometimes called ISDS).

This threat is laughable. Even Judge O’Connor can’t help him follow through, for a dozen reasons.
