Big Ten university faculties push for defense compact against Trump. The proposed NATO-like alliance for the 18 schools would allow them to share resources in case the president targets one of their members.

The Miami Herald is doing remarkable public service journalism on deported Venezuelans and the crimes being committed against them. Almost like news institutions that are located in and around the communities they serve end up being accountable for serving those communities

I think one thing chatGPT's invention has revealed is how many people - including some very important people in society - find just basic reading and writing to be laborious and cumbersome to perform, and how oddly closely that type of strained literacy correlates with having other shitty opinions.

teaching is existentially hard, but when a former student emails you to tell you that they took advice you gave them years ago, transformed it to fit their life specifically , and it worked

NSF just slashed its graduate research fellowships by 51%.
This prestigious program has trained & nurtured at least 42 scientists who went on to become Nobel laureates.
We're destroying it, at exactly the time we claim to worry about our "sputnik moment" with China

This 51% cut to graduate fellowships is a bloodbath.

And it's one of the first public indications of just how much NSF thinks its STEM education budget (the EDU directorate funds the GRFP) might be slashed by Congress.

(Prior, we only knew that new EDU awards were being evaluated but not issued)

It is surreal for me to have an MFA in poetry (POETRY!!!!) and to know in my waters that I am instrumentally smarter about the modern global economy than roughly 1/3 of the president’s advisors

Got to write an elegy for Val Kilmer for @gqmagazine.bsky.social . SPARTAN and BATMAN FOREVER got dismissed when they were released, but they are now touchstones for everything that made Kilmer special. He was a rare man and his refusal to be normal made him great

The “Bad” Val Kilmer Movies That Actually Prove He Deserves More Credit Than We Gave Him
Battling Two-Face and the Joker—and squaring off with David Mamet? Kilmer was the only actor who could do both.

“Don’t you teach them knife fighting. You teach them how to kill. That way, when they meet some poor son of a birch who learned knife fighting, they’ll send his soul to hell.”
I was there for Peak Kilmer, from Top Gun on, but my favorite of his is “Spartan,” a David Mamet political thriller in which he plays the World’s Most Competent Secret Agent. He absolutely pulls it off.

THE MASSACRE, 50 Cent’s strange, slack second album, was released twenty years ago this month. It was an inflection point for his career, for rap, and for the Millennial music industry at large. I looked back for @gqmagazine.bsky.social

Revisiting 50 Cent's ‘The Massacre,’ a Turning Point For 50, Rap Music in the 2000s, and the Fine Art of Hating
His debut album Get Rich or Die Trying defined an era. His follow-up, which turned 20 this month, became a cautionary tale.
