I think the most damaging writing advice I ever heard was that you have to write every day. A standard to fail at and a club to beat yourself over the head with. The most useful, that you have to finish things.

I think a lot of writers don’t fully realise what a triumph of discipline and drive it is to finish even one work—poem, short story, novella, novel, anything. Lots of folk with all the advantages, resources, and spare time in the world can’t manage it.
