this point really hits the nail on the head of why localization workers are so frustrated by “AI” loc companies.
freelancers have to beg for a single dollar wage increase, while tens of millions are dumped into a machine designed to replace them.
the machine doesn’t even work. freelancers do.
one of the things that makes me most mad about genAI (and there are many) is we've been told there's not enough money for hiring. but there's billions poured into ai.

so not enough money to hire workers. but infinite money to pour into technology whose goal is never having to pay workers again.

I started learning Japanese to play otome games that hadn't been localized yet. A few years later, I played a mobile otome with a subpar translation and poked fun at it on Twitter. The producer contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in doing editing and LQA for their games.
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

This is essentially what people think “post-editing AI translation” jobs are, instead of the reality which is “redo the translation from scratch and get paid less for it”
The important thing is that net happiness goes up.

Important update: I have received word from insiders that Crunchyroll executives have deemed the user backlash to be small enough that their subtitle enshittification & OOONA plans will NOT be cancelled, only delayed.

I have added an update to the article. There's a summary at the top now too.
