I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted

Afternoon! I am reading Villager by Tom Cox, a collection of short stories that’s also a novel about a village in Devon at different moments in the recent past, the present & the near future. So evocative I think I am sitting in a dripping, ferny coombe.

I used to interview celebrities. But then I gave that up and started going on long walks instead. On some of these walks, I had the great fortune of meeting some scarecrows. Call me a contrarian but I've found that much more interesting to write about, on the whole... www.tom-cox.com/photographs-...

The most awesome, hilarious, MAGA-imploding Twitter feature happened yesterday and y’all, I’m here for it.
No, normally I wouldn’t post about Twitter over here on Bluesky, but y’all have to see this.
X begins rolling out the 'About this account' feature to users' profiles | TechCrunch
The feature will show where users are based, how they're connected to X, and how many times they've changed their username.

Today we won a big victory in Texas but the fight for democracy is not over. We all need to steel ourselves for the battles ahead. We won't win them all, but we can never lose sight of what we need to do to prepare fee and fair elections.

As all this disgusting Epstein shit starts surfacing more and more, I hope we don't lose sight of the fact that apparently every major media outlet knew everything and instead spent their time money and energy attacking the trans community.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born on this day in 1815 in Johnstown, N.Y. She was a leading figure in the 19th-century women’s rights movement, known for advocating women’s suffrage, property rights, divorce reform, and overall legal and social equality. /1

Stanton helped organize the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, the first organized women’s rights convention in the U.S. She was the primary author of the Declaration of Sentiments, and her controversial resolution demanding the right to vote formally launched the women’s suffrage movement. /2

Beginning in 1851, Stanton formed a lifelong partnership with Susan B. Anthony and often wrote Anthony’s speeches. Outraged that the 14th and 15th Amendments granted voting rights to Black men but not women, Stanton and Anthony founded the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. /3

Stanton championed a wide range of reforms, including married women’s right to own property, retain their wages and gain joint custody of children in divorce cases. She also advocated liberalized divorce laws. She ran for Congress in 1866 to challenge the idea that only men could hold office. /4

Stanton’s significant works include co-authoring the first three volumes of the six-volume History of Woman Suffrage (1881–1886) and publishing the controversial bestseller The Woman’s Bible (1895), a critical examination of how organized religion and scripture were used to subjugate women. /5

Stanton died in 1902, eighteen years before the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote, was ratified in 1920. However, her radical ideas and comprehensive vision laid the intellectual foundation for future generations of feminists. /end
