I'm putting together a starter pack for people obsessed with Christmas: authors who have written about the holiday, people with a year-round appreciation of Christmas movies, yuletide folklore/history buffs - you name it.

Recommendations appreciated!
A movie that takes place where you're from

Two of the best animated Christmas movies ever made came out last year, but neither was a US production, so no one noticed.

"The Boy Who Saved Christmas" is without a doubt a bad movie, but it knows this, leans into it, and concludes with a laser battle between Santa and his evil brother, Atnas, so in this case "bad" isn't necessarily a deal-breaker. #filmsky

The Reckless Moment features a great performance from James Mason, but it falls more on the melodrama end of the holiday noir spectrum, as opposed to the "crime/detective story" side. I'll leave it to you to decide whether or not that's a flaw. #filmsky

Watched the new Red Sonja, and it was better than I was expecting.

I mean, set realistic expectations here: this is less Lord of the Rings than an homage to low-budget fantasy movies and TV, but it's not bad.

There's some stuff in the 3rd act that's genuinely surprising. #filmsky

Once they get AI to the point it'll self-destruct upon command, I'll start writing for AI.
Saw a post today that advised writers to stop writing as if a human will read it and start writing for an LLM that will be summarising.

As someone who really enjoyed trying to develop a peculiar but readable authorial voice, I find this incredibly depressing.

Well intentioned but infamously bad, "Some of My Best Friends Are..." is far less interesting than the Wikipedia articles of its remarkable cast. #filmsky

I'm a little embarrassed it took me until this year to realize Kurosawa made a Christmas movie. Scandal is, unsurprising, a great film, well worth checking out. #filmsky

This this this this THIS THIS

Also, the reason new movies look worst to you is you've only seen <1% of "old movies", and the ones you have seen are the absolute best of the best that endured.
I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Movies from every era look "the same" vibes wise because of a combination of the film stocks of the time, the technology of the time, stylistic choices of the time, the fashion of the time, and even the influences of the time.

Hey, you got Kanopy, the free library based streaming service? If not, get it. Now.

Then, once you're signed up, check and see if you've got access to a new animated movie called "Animal Tales of Magic". You probably do.

Watch it. Your kids can see it, too.

Oh, one last thing: you're welcome.

Babygirl works as an updated spin on the 'Feast of Fools' motif in which power dynamics are inverted around the holidays. Was this intentional? Damned if I know, but it makes for a great Christmas movie either way. #filmsky

I'm starting to suspect movies that credit their leads as things like "Man" and "Woman" aren't actually making intricate statements about POV and how any of our lives could have brought us to different places, but instead just have very lazy screenwriters.

The next three greenlit scripts set in bars or coffee shops should be changed to submarines with only minimal rewrites, and vice versa.
Films would be improved immeasurably if the producers were made to answer the following:

Can this be set on a submarine? If not, why not? Explain yourself.
