If you've read There Is No Place for Us, you'll remember that at the end of the book, after an anguished stretch of homelessness, Kara and her children finally move into an apartment at Chelsea Gardens—a run-down, aging complex in College Park. A place she hoped would be their fresh start.

But turn that murder into systemic, generational slavery?

Great insights. Especially among young adults, the lack of broader intellectual engagement threatens vocational satisfaction, no matter what they do.

Not everyone is the "small magazine" type, but we all can nurture these things in coffee dates, dinner parties, meandering conversations, etc.

@rutgerbregman.com thank you for this questioning of vocations! I work in an NGO for young people, and I see a lot of people in the Idealistic but not Ambitious quadrant. Being more ambitious is scary!

No, you’re not fine just the way you are: time to quit your pointless job, become morally ambitious and change the world
Most working people can be put into one of three categories, from idealistic yet unambitious to greedy and immoral. But there is another option …

The only appropriate response to this is impeachment and removal from office. Every moment the political press spends spinning out theories about 2026 and immigration polling is a minute they are not spending asking Republicans in Congress about their plans to enforce the rule of law

I agree with all of the below.

But I am now wondering, what does it mean for our society that his approval rating remains so high? How much of that same mentality now pervades people's perception of society, both in politics and other spheres of life?

The business world often talks about values but in reality they are talking about methods -- how they do business as usual to accomplish the same goal (i.e. make as much money as possible)

A value should be an orienting guidepost when the way seems unclear, and that may involve painful choices.
“Values are only as good as their durability under pressure; and many of America’s largest companies proved an equitable, inclusive workplace was never one of their core values to begin with.”

"We must be as frank as possible about the challenges before us and willing to call things as we see them, no matter what our opponents or even our own allies might say."

True, but it's not sufficient to call out things. The way we do it can bring us back to unifying values and our shared humanity.
