let's remember that it was an NIH scientist who designed the core of the Moderna Covid vaccine *over a single weekend*
Shutting down medical research — not just within NIH, but everywhere that’s funded by NIH — will have long-term effects on medicine & short-term effects on state, higher education & hospital budgets. This affects all of us, not just researchers.
The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!

That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?

“hole in the ozone layer” levels of erasure. my mom was a project manager who busted her ass for years to make sure IBM was ready for Y2K and completely succeeded, only for it to get turned into a late night joke. funny how the stories of mass collective action to avoid disaster rarely get told
DAMMIT NPR.

I spent nine months upgrading over TEN THOUSAND desktops at a F500 client. The grand total was over SEVENTY THOUSAND applications upgraded.

Y2K "didn't live up to the hype" because the industry busted ass to duct tape everything first.

People feared the computer glitch would mean "the end of the world as we know it." Thankfully, Y2K didn't live up to the hype after years and billions of dollars were spent on painstaking preparation.

After nearly three decades, a Minnesota summer camp for kids with HIV/AIDS is closing and up for sale... because retroviral drugs are so effective that there aren't enough campers.

Science works, y'all.

If you want to understand why healthcare pricing is horrific, the first thing to know is that our system puts 100% of the credit risk for deductibles, copays and co-insurance on hospitals and doctors. That's insane.

We have turned them into Sub Prime Lenders 🧵

So not only did Brexit screw the economy and antagonize our allies, it didn’t even achieve its most basic, xenophobic aim… what a disgrace.
“We must leave the EU to control our borders and stop mass immigration,” they said.

And it was the same people who said that who were then in government.

Brexit has simply led to the reverse of everything it said it was about.
