Here's my theory on her pivot
My take on Marjorie Taylor Greene is that she's an honestly dumb person with sincere beliefs, and those sincere beliefs are based on the myth of what Republicans and Democrats stand for.

She'll never be a Democrat, but she's starting to see exactly who the rightwing is, and it's disgusting to her.

In general I think professional
Republicans are cynical, knowing people, who enjoy operating in bad faith, or at least tell themselves it’s for a greater good. At the farthest fringes, though, there are loons and marks who do and say crazy, bigoted shit without necessarily being bad-faith actors. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Exactly! Almost everyone else on the right never believed the Qanon stuff - they just used it and went along with it (even the people pushing it didn’t believe). MTG did. It’s reminds me of the scene from the Master when Joaquin phoenix realizes the cult is a con.

And we don’t want to admit that the combination of Facebook and GOP acceptance of Trump made her Qanon true belief possible. We prefer to believe people MTG are either manipulators or crazy. She’s putting a face to the human costs of being a MAGA diehard.

She's been absolutely odious in a hundred ways, but it's highly unusual for a right wing politician to voluntarily take in new information, publicly revise a position, and then apologize--and it was a real apology, too.

Publicly breaking from Trump is still political suicide, but aside from that, she loved him, like LOVED him--remember her rubbing all over that cardboard cut out of him? I also remember her getting excoriated by the Auschwitz Museum for dumb remarks, going to the US Holocaust Museum and apologizing

I've been getting crap all day for saying this. I can imagine her slowly coming to the realization that there's no plausible explanation for Trump's position on the Epstein files other than the obvious. bsky.app/profile/emke...
There was no truer believer than MTG--not just in Trump, but Jewish space laser, school shooting hoaxes, the whole right wing mountain of lies. If the Epstein files finally made HER realize that Trump's full of shit, and wonder if it was ALL bullshit, that can happen to a lot of other people too

Her journey is more reminiscent of the experience of ex-Scientologists rather than a political repositioning.

I genuinely see the same thing you do - MTG was a Qanon true believer and found Trump coverup of the Epstein files as shattering to her entire worldview. I think people are more cynical about it because they understand political ambition more than Qanon true belief.

and it makes the moral outrage look selective at best and hypocritical at worst.

This country throws righteous fury at Epstein and it should but what about the states that let middle-aged men legally marry girls who aren’t old enough to drive? What about the judges who signed off on it?

Damn you.

Just trying to imagine the torches and pitchforks if a woman said something similar about men. She'd be unemployable.

My thoughts exactly.

Just needs an ethnic slur as a code name for her and he's good to go.
