On this day, 59 years ago, Dr. Cluny Macpherson of St. John's died. During the First World War he created the hypo helmet (also known as the British smoke hood), an early gas mask. One day my manuscript on his life will be a real book #amwriting www.cbc.ca/newsinteract...

On this day in 1966, Cluny Macpherson died.
Born in St. John's in 1879, he invented the gas mask during the First World War. His design was adopted by the British Army. He later became the president of the St. John's Clinical Society and the Newfoundland Medical Association.

One of Canada's best historians, his books were fantastic. He was nice enough to give me a tour of the Canadian War Museum where he was the chief historian.

Alberta has banned graphic books before. In the 1950s, 'salacious' comics were the target | CBC News
In 1954, the province established the Advisory Board on Objectionable Publications to investigate "crime comics" that supposedly inspired undesirable behaviour in kids.

I have written and deleted a lot of posts but I keep thinking about how the brutal assassination of Minnesota State senator Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert in June did not prompt this same level of calls for empathy, sympathy, and flags at half-mast.
