have reread the phrase “30-40+ inches of additional rain” several times now
Jamaica, in particular, will likely suffer catastrophic impacts from now rapidly-intensifying (but slow-moving) Hurricane #Melissa. A *Category 5* landfall now appears to be the most likely outcome, & 30-40+ inches of *additional* rain in mountains will lead to extreme flooding.

So, @talkingpointsmemo.com is running a series of posts on the 21st century of journalism & media & it's got me thinking about how I've survived for 20+ years in this biz. It's raining, I'm bored, so I'm gonna do a thread.

one mistake people made in this era — in my opinion — is developing a brand rather than a style. developing a style makes you distinct and irreplaceable; it will carry with you to anything you choose to write about. it's one of the reasons people get excited about specific magazine writers
... a "brand." Instead of looking out into the world for stories, people started consulting their navels. What's my special unique take on this? How do I want to position myself? What's my bespoke "lived experience" that no one else can replicated? That will be my brand!
