A swirling spiral galaxy dominates the center of the image. The galaxy, NGC 3507, is located roughly 100 million light-years away in the constellation Orion. The bright star-like nucleus of the galaxy is surrounded by dust and gas, which appears red in the image. This red coloring is due to the infrared light captured by the James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). The spiral arms of the galaxy are winding outwards from the center, and they are colored white in the image. This white coloring is due to the near-infrared light captured by JWST’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). Overall, the image provides a detailed view of the structure of a spiral galaxy, NGC 3507.

While setting up to photograph a launch at Vandenberg SFB (which was scrubbed), I fired off a few test shots of the zodiacal light. In review, I noticed that I also captured Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks. Small--very small--when shot with a 24mm wide-angle lens.

A kaleidoscope of butterflies for #WorldButterflyDay. 🧪🐡🦋It’s also #PiDay so I feel this the symmetries of this print which I laid out with a compass & some geometric tricks, seems apt.

This lino block print is printed in black ink on Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper 12.5 inches by 12 inches, or 31.7 cm by 30.5 cm in dimension. Each butterfly involves 'chine collé' (collaged, delicate, Japanese paper) for their glorious colour. They are arrayed with a three-fold symmetry, like images in a toy kaleidoscope. There are three each of the orange Isabella's Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), three yellow Eastern tiger swallowtails (Papilio glaucus), and three blue Red-Spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis astyanax).
