Not my favorite (I swear insects are the hardest inverts to draw) but HOW AMAZING are these guys' eyes? Look up male mayflies of the Baeditae family.

The collective noun for a group of jellyfish is a "smack". This amuses me, because I imagine them smacking their tentacles together in some sort of deepsea high five.🧵

Initial model for March's #InsertAnInvert2024, Diacria trispinosa (a sea butterfly). The plan is to print the body in transparent, and have solid colored "organs". I have no idea if this will work; I'm leaping off the creative cliff and hoping for more jello than sharp rocks at the bottom.

Decided to attempt a gummy squirrel for this week's #InsertAnInvert2024. I do like an upsetting thing.

Will We All Turn Into Crabs Eventually? The process where unrelated species evolve over time to develop similar features is known as convergent evolution. Carcinisation. When crab-like crustaceans do not develop a crab shape over time, this is called carcinisation. This form of convergent evolution has led to the emergence of "false crabs" such as the king crab. [hermit crab and an arrow pointing to a king crab & squat lobster and an arrow pointing to a porcelain crab] Video game controllers. [NES, N64 & Switch on the left & xbox on the right] Carcinisation has only occurred in crustaceans. The crab-like body structure is useful for their specific anatomy, as it offers them protection, helps with mobility and feeding. Video game controllers have developed a similar shape over time, which simply makes the most sense for their use. However, just as not every animal evolves into a crab, not every technology will eventually end up looking like a video game controller.

Wormification - Long, limbless

Nemerteans are a rather obscure group of mostly carnivorous marine worms.

True to their common name, ribbon worms, they're often very slim and unnecessarily long, making them some of the wormiest looking worms in a sea of worms. 🎨 🐡

Parasitic copepods never cease to amaze! This is Pseudoblias lyrifera (Chondracanthidae). About 3mm long, they live in the mouth of fish. I love the little legs that are reduced to oven mitts (right image). The tiny comma-shaped thing at the bottom end is an attached male 🧪

For the third abomination crustacean #InsertAnInvert2024, I can only find one direct image of the species, Lernanthropus chrysophrys. This slightly more crustacean looking blob is a copepod parasitizing the gill filament of a fish 🦑🧪
