Consistently ranked as one of the best downtowns in New England, attracting tourists from around the world, none of the buildings depicted in this image could be constructed today under our overly restrictive modern zoning regulations.

In a functional housing market this would have been redeveloped as a small apartment building 30 years ago.
A hearty congratulations to the home buyer who picked up this fantastic 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1085 sqft starter home in Palo Alto!

this is true - but pales in comparison to resources required for cars tho
We should talk more about resource efficiency & the circular economy in transport.

“The e-bike sector is one with great potential to improve both environmental and public health. But to realise these benefits, we need to focus on making them last longer and use less resources.”

Electric bike batteries can be particularly dangerous and tricky to dispose of.

the embodied carbon potential of point access blocks v. status quo development is quite massive

better homes. higher quality of life. better outcomes related to climate, too.
that's a 28% reduction just in the number of constructed square feet per bedroom...

but the swiss project by ADP is also mostly family sized homes - 2 and 3 bedroom units. every unit is corner aspect (light on 2 sides) or triple aspect (daylight on 3 sides)

Every Tuesday I have open office hours.

And every Tuesday somebody comes to tell me that their neighborhood is diverse (by their definition) and they just love it, but that they don’t want those people moving to their neighborhood.

The neighborhood is not theirs. It’s the city’s.

DOT has no contract with its principal streetlight maintenance vendor (BGE), no coherent reporting system, and no discernible system of asset management.

Gee, I wonder why there are still streetlights missing that got knocked down a decade ago.

sprawl is an unmitigated environmental, social, and economic disaster

it is no longer affordable (especially when you add in transportation and time)

sprawl is driving climate change. literally.

and it is a ponzi scheme - unable to fund maintenance and replacement costs
Not a single time in this article glorifying the need for sprawl to address the US's affordable housing crisis is there a mention of the vast transportation costs of sprawling living patterns. Nor is there mention of the fact that sprawl is directly linked to disinvestment in urban cores.
America Needs More Sprawl to Fix Its Housing Crisis
The word has become an epithet for garish, reckless growth — but to fix the housing crisis, the country needs more of it.
