A major new report on climate tipping points was published today, produced by 200 researchers from 90 organisations in 26 countries.
Read the brief summary in the Guardian:

What a fossil fuel sell-out... Do we get to throw the books and research papers at him that show *exactly* how this is possible?

"Show me the roadmap for a phase-out of fossil fuel that will allow for sustainable socioeconomic development, unless you want to take the world back into caves."
Cop28 president forced into defence of fossil fuel phase-out claims
Sultan Al Jaber, who is state oil CEO, had said phase-out of fossil fuels would take world ‘back into caves’

We need to reduce emissions. We do not need to pay to not cut down forests to allow us to produce more emissions.

A worthwhile reminder, considering that many of conversations for business still seem to only be on emission reduction and the energy transition. Important and necessary, but not sufficient.

25. We’re finally getting serious about net zero carbon. Getting that last 10-30% of carbon out will be hard, and require some expensive solutions. The first 70-90% is easy-ish but we're getting on with it.

Some people say that because we're still emitting a lot of CO₂, we must deploy CO₂ removal (CDR) ASAP. This is wrong.

CDR will be useless as long as we're still emitting tens of billions of tonnes of CO₂.

We need to decarbonize ASAP so that CDR can be effective.

For companies trying not to greenwash, working towards what they are claiming to be doing is a great start…..and sort of obvious, no? Walk the talk, anyone?

Good thread about the rapidly changing global climate and the post is linked in The Guardian article here: www.theguardian.com/environment/...
The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was – in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.7C to 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.

Wonderful post by Fairphone on how Apple could have improved the script for their recent sustainability-related advertisement.

Key point: stop the focus on consumerism.

Unsurprising, yet sad news. A reminder that 1.5 degrees to 2.0 degrees has a huge impact (see link). There is also, in economic terms, a significant cost. I wish news stories talked less about the cost of the sustainability transition and more about the benefits.

Top story for September 28, 2023: A new report from climatologist James Hansen shows that global warming is accelerating — making 1.5°C virtually certain.

This fits perfectly with the needed change in mindset for businesses. Why are we in business? How are we creating positive social, environmental, and financial value? For whom are we creating (or destroying) value?

Also: positive environmental value, not just ‘less damage’
The problem is not simply that capitalism produces too much, but that it produces the wrong stuff: SUVs, fast fashion and planned obsolescence instead of public transit, affordable housing and universal healthcare. It overuses resources and still fails to meet even basic needs.

Wait, what?!

Canada’s Suncor CEO is giving a perfect example of the deep flaws in the shareholder-primacy model and its short-term focus.

Carbon offsets need to be used very carefully. There is even more evidence that organizations providing them are not delivering what they promised: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/....

Also, why do we believe in the free market so much that giving offsets for *not* cutting down trees is a good idea??
