I'm from Alberta and I'm just so proud of the 'Fossil of the Day' award that they won at COP28 🤦‍♂️

One of the main purposes of the sustainability transformation is to improve people's well-being. On the other hand, not weaning ourselves rapidly off of fossil fuels will have major negative impacts to our civilization and well-being.

Yes, for sure, and there are many ways to wean ourselves off them and still maintain civilization. I think even the idea that civilization may be at risk is an idea from climate change deniers and people actively trying to block action.

Yes, that’s a good reminder. That sounds kind of similar to other sustainability issues. For example, some companies seem so focused on the costs of the transition that they miss thinking about opportunities. They’re then reluctant to set major (and necessary) sustainability transition goals…

And I’m guessing that Finnish solutions have a lot that would work for Canada - built for long distances, cold, lower population density, etc. I’m currently living in The Netherlands, where they have lots of trains and bikes, but it’s flat as a pancake, small, and has mild winters.

…because it’s not at all unethical or immoral to do oil and gas networking at an important climate change event….

Yes, agreed! I just wanted to emphasize that this information is important for businesses too - it’s not just a political problem or something that’s ‘too complex’ for the businesses to handle

Not solving climate change will have much worse side effects 😅

This is great, thank you for sharing! Are you also considering looking at positive shifts in in the wider transition related to the planetary boundaries, beyond only climate change?

Also, more daunting than the idea of transforming is the idea of doing nothing.

@danielrembrandt.bsky.social and, per some of your previous posts, 2050 is much too far away for net-zero goals. Which is probably also one of the reasons people are thinking in terms of decades before they need to do serious emission reductions…
November 14, 2023 at 5:44 PM
Yes definitely and maybe it is still fair to be cynical if their net zero plan relies only on offsets/capture with no emission reductions? I think those cases might actually be worse than having no plan, with them creating a false sense of progress.

25. We’re finally getting serious about net zero carbon. Getting that last 10-30% of carbon out will be hard, and require some expensive solutions. The first 70-90% is easy-ish but we're getting on with it.

If you haven’t yet encountered the work by @kateraworth.bsky.social, I highly recommend her book, Doughnut Economics. She links economics with planetary boundaries and recognized social foundations. The goal is to have a just and safe space for humanity on this planet.

Could number 7 be something like ‘Understating reductions in energy use’? Focusing solely on new technology and efficiency seemingly misses changing the way we do business and rethinking how we create value. E.g. reducing consumption and switching to services instead of products.

Unless you’re talking about how soon a journal wants a resubmission or how long it takes to get a decision from a journal 😅

Yes, definitely! You have a great point :). I just find it frustrating when these articles and interviewed experts somehow completely miss that there are people involved in these decisions.
