Finally decided to make an account. I'm a Religious Studies PhD Candidate working on religious world building in experimental African American literature. I'm especially interested in how Black authors cultivate alternative perceptions of freedom by experimenting with East and South Asian thought.

It's really a treasure to get to teach August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean for the rest of my life. Every time I read this play, I end up filled with a strong feeling of wind.

Lunch was a fairly simple one: sliced fruits—apple, pear, greengage, and plum, some fresh-baked scones and gooseberry and damson jam, and plum cordial, foamy and cold from Corksnout Spikkle's vaults.

It says a lot about Sliwa that the only question he outflanked both Mamdani and Cuomo on was about parades

Education is so weird. What do you mean I've lectured to these kids for seven weeks, and then they write papers, and those papers say the things I said in the lectures? Wtf???

The transition from TA to Prof means that I can no longer curse the lead instructor for making me grade so much. Now I am my own grading clown.

I'm about to pick up a post-graduation bread machine hobby. We're talking milk breads, cheese breads, nut breads, goddamn raisin bread. The whole bread (machine) horizon is in front of me

The upside to having my students complete kinda complex reading guides before every class is that they do read and have very well put together thoughts for discussion, 10/10 would recommend. The downside is that I have to make those reading guides...

So I can't claim Mainer... yet?? Ever?? But I can tell people I'm a... Maniac? There has to be an in-between that has a little bit more aura than "I'm from Maine." Maine-boi? I'm North-North? I'm your Maine squeeze? Maine protagonist? Mainely from Maine. Lobster-lander?

this is the level of funding where all the possibilities for American politics that have been described as hyperbolic over the past decades - the comparisons to Nazi Germany and other nightmares of the 20th century - become logistically possible and politically likely
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

Research IS the fun stuff, my guy. It is the sauce.

Writing about anything Black with serious emotional openness is daunting. I'm breathing through gut punches of realization that are hard to push through, and even harder to articulate in academic prose. In its joyful moments, it's bright--soaring. In its painful ones, it pokes and pokes and pokes.

But if you follow me & don’t know about Actual Play, or have been skeptical, this is the podcast I recommend as proof of what the form can do.
Last week, episode 47 of The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One, titled “The Battle of Twelve Brooks Part 1”, premiered on @worldsbeyondnumber.bsky.social, and after months of waiting, this moment, rendered here in stunning visual by the incredible @kortizart.bsky.social
