10:30 on a Sunday morning is an inappropriate time to be walking through clouds of weed smoke and I will not apologize for this opinion.

The flip side of this is that ideas and energy can get you a lot farther in LA. Everyone in LA came from somewhere else; they want to know what you can do next.
I like Los Angeles and would live there again but I think it's correct, for better or for worse, that your not-LA credentials do not particularly transfer to it.

Organizers told me that at least 7 faith leaders were among those arrested on Friday.

In a statement posted on X, DHS referred to demonstrators as "imbeciles" who need to "get a job."

One pastor told me "this is our job," adding, "to advocate for the oppressed. religionnews.com/2025/11/15/a...

This is exactly what I said would happen when they legalized sports betting in DC and someone said I was being ridiculous.
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.

15-year-old girls who insist they’re mature for their age are some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
Megyn Kelly: "I know somebody very close to this case…Jeffrey Epstein, in this person's view, was not a pedophile…He was into the barely legal type, like he liked 15 year old girls…He wasn't into like 8 year olds…There's a difference between a 15 year old and a 5 year old."

43 days of unread emails. I can’t even. “Select All” + “Delete.” Godspeed, thank you, and sorry.
Today many federal employees will get back to work for the first time since Sept 30. That’s 43 days of unread emails, missed obligations, and extraordinary stress.

If you need something from me, please be patient with as I work through my inbox and sort through shifted priorities/timelines.

If you need to clear your brain for a while, may I recommend revisiting the first Fine Young Cannibals album? This is not the version of the song of the album; I’m just sharing it because we all need some Roland Gift. youtu.be/8_IURyb9y1w?...

They're all such dreadful people. People I'd switch tables or even leave a room to get away from.

This was my grandfather—any dress without a belted waistline, he’d call a housedress.
My mum, then in late middle age, meeting up with similar ladies in the town we used to live in, wearing what she thought was quite a becoming, semi-formal dress:

"You're very ... comfortable... aren't you?"

I open every new editing project feeling hostile to it and myself. At some point during the first read-through, I see what it’s trying to be and from then on, I will die for it. I pretty much make human friends the same way.

I was nine or ten when I read ROSEMARY'S BABY and the Satan stuff didn't bother me half as much as the idea that your own husband could totally sacrifice you for his own ambition. (And I wonder why I never married.)
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

The lovely woman who cuts my hair has let a couple of her longtime clients who are federal employees owe her for services during the shutdown. "You feel better if you look better," she says, and she trusts them to pay her once they get paid again. ❤️

Dad's naval service defined him, but he never applied for the veteran's benefits he was entitled to. I didn't know that until after he died. I wish I could ask him why.

🌬️It's like mid-January out there!

🧣Hope everyone is bundled up. Freezing temps (mid-20s to low 30s) and bitter wind chills -- in the teens and low 20s -- across the D.C. region.
