Today I discovered, quite by accident, that if I have to interact with too many people in a day then deciding which Muppet would play them is a good strategy.

I definitely met Bunsen and Scooter and possibly a Swedish Chef. Thankfully no Statler and Waldorf. I wish to be played by Kermit please.

This is pretty much a précis of my lecture to software engineering students.
If you understand what software engineering as a career actually entails (lots of people and organizational problems, understanding legacy code and tradeoffs) you are at a career advantage over those who understand the job as just producing code.

Those jobs could be replaced. But that ain’t the job

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

I got permission to share this, and I'm extremely grateful for that.

The Onion got this letter from one of our subscribers in Alaska. She works with dementia patients and decided to leave a copy in the car for each one.

This email made my year. Read it and you'll see what I mean. People are good.

This is not the future that 15 year old me imagined back in 1985.

Somehow being logged out of one’s toothbrush hits me as incredibly dystopian.
I have been logged out of my toothbrush.

Our new neighbors threw their takeout containers in the trash, and the raccoons dug in and got the good bits. The squirrels had a feast for days on what was left. When they rolled the can to the curb, the alpha squirrel turned aggressive and tried to stop the garbage men from taking its pantry away.

Among my regular passengers on the 44 are two young boys who ride with their grandma from California and 6th Ave all the way to Silver and Palou. The older brother is possibly a 2nd grader. Last night as they were getting off my bus, he handed me this hand made envelope.
